Jumping over the newborn and 7 other weird baby traditions from around the world

Just like every baby is different, every country has its own cultures and traditions for the little ones. Some of these customs are outright strange and while others make for a good example. From no make-up rule to jumping on the newborns, here is a list of extremely bizarre baby traditions followed around the world.

2/9

Australia

In Australia, babies are dunked into the water as soon as they are born.

3/9

Armenia

Babies in Armenia are not taken out of the house for the first 40 days. If friends and family want to meet the baby, they have to come to visit the house. After 40 days, the kids are taken to the Church first to seek the blessings of the priest.

4/9

Greece

Parents in Greece do not let their baby see their reflection in the mirror until they are christened. Moms are not allowed to wash their baby’s clothes as they believe that it would let the devil enter the clothes. Strange!

5/9

Italy

People love to pamper and give compliments to newborn babies. But mothers in Italy are particularly wary of others remarks about their baby. The best way to give a compliment in Italy is by including ‘sense malocchio’ meaning without an evil eye.

6/9

China

Many parents will be surprised to know, but kids in China are potty trained even before they turn one. Some families start as early as when their babies learn to hold their heads up. Parents hold their babies over the toilet seat and make a whistle-like sound to potty train their babies.

7/9

Iceland

Despite the harsh weather conditions, people in Iceland leave their babies outside to take a nap. They believe that this may contribute to increasing the lifespan of the kids.

8/9

Spain

In Spain, people observe a very weird baby ritual during the yearly festival of Corpus Christi. Babies born in that one year are placed on pillows on the streets row-wise. A man dressed up as a devil jumps over these kids. It is believed that once the act is done, the child is absolved of their sinful life.

9/9

Brazil

We are sure you will love this one. In Brazil, girls are taught to be calm and focus on the importance of inner beauty from an early age. The rule is such that even preschools have a strict no make-up rule for kids.
