What first time parents should know

As beautiful as the first years of parenting are, it is as nerve-racking, especially for first-time parents. In addition to the myriad of advice and tips your loved ones overwhelm you with, you're somehow left confused and stressed about this entire process of handling a newborn. It is very likely that despite all the efforts and energy you put in to make parenting a beautiful process, you may somehow miss or overlook a lot of things. That said, here are some common mistakes every first time parent must avoid, especially in the first year after childbirth.

2/8

Becoming anxious and stressed about breastfeeding

For parents, especially the mother, the first year after childbirth can be difficult and stressful. Breastfeeding, which is an integral part of motherhood, may be one of the greatest concerns of new moms.

The first thing that you must remember is that breast milk is the source of your child's nutrition atleast for up to 6 months exclusively and then together with appropriate complementary foods for up to 2 years of age or longer, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization.

Additionally, it is important that you breastfeed at your child's demand and not according to a schedule. This is called demand feeding, wherein your baby will tell you when they need to be fed.

However, overstressing or being anxious about breastfeeding is not the way to go ahead. Seek family or professional help if you feel under any pressure.

3/8

Panicking about little things like crying and burping

Babies cry. There is no science behind it. However, as a new parent, it is normal to feel anxious about it. Given that newborn babies cannot communicate, it makes the parents more nervous, thinking about all the things that could be going wrong. What needs to be kept in mind is that whether it is a fever, a rash, tiredness or hunger, a baby will cry to communicate. That said, it is important that you be calm. Be observant, check for any changes in their temperature, if the crying is persistent, even after breastfeeding, then visit a doctor. Most importantly, do not assume the worst.

4/8

Not letting the baby sleep in their own crib

Many of the mothers think it is okay to keep the child next to them on the bed when they're sleeping. Experts say otherwise. According to the guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, every baby should sleep on their back, in their own crib, without any toys or soft bedding. Safe sleep is believed to protect babies from sudden infant death syndrome (also called SIDS) and other dangers, like choking and suffocation.

5/8

Not focusing on tummy time

Tummy time is an infant activity where you place your baby on his or her stomach and they work towards lifting their heads upwards. This helps in strengthening their neck and shoulder muscles. Tummy time for babies is recommended to start soon after birth. It could begin with 1 to 2 minutes a few times a day. Over time it can be increased to 10-15 minutes.

This activity is extremely important for your child's growth and motor skills. It also prevents the back of your baby's head from developing flat spots.

6/8

Spending on things you don't even need

First-time parents often make the mistake of buying a lot of baby items that their newborns don't even need or understand. Make a list of the things that you really need and do not spend on things that you find cute or accessories that will only create a mess around the house. Plan better and buy things that will come in use.

7/8

Taking newborns everywhere, even crowded places

One of the biggest mistakes new parents usually make is taking their newborns everywhere with them. While as parents you may feel obligated to stay close to your baby, it does not mean you risk their health by taking them out in crowded places. Their immune system is still very vulnerable and weak. It is still developing, which is why keep them away from large gatherings, even if it is at your own house.

8/8

Neglecting self-care as well as your partner

Post-childbirth, besides taking care of your baby, you must also care for yourself and your partner. Many parents neglect self care and also their partners in the process of handling their parental duties. Remember, if you're not okay, if your relationship is suffering, there is no way you will be able to give your full to your child. Make sure you build and strengthen your bond with your partner, give yourself alone time and take turns in taking care of your child.
