5 ways to develop and improve reading skills in children

There is no friend as loyal as a book. Reading is a strong skill that lays the foundation for academic and life success in children. Developing these reading skills is crucial, and it all begins in childhood. A parent has to introduce their kids to the world of knowledge. Early engagement with reading enhances cognitive development, vocabulary, and comprehension. But how does one get the child to read? Here are five effective strategies to foster and improve reading skills in children.

2/6

A cozy corner

Surrounding children with books isn’t enough to spark curiosity. Creating an atmosphere that makes them want to spend time is crucial. Set a cozy corner for your library. One with a balcony or window would be ideal. Now stock the library with diverse, age-appropriate materials, including picture books, novels, and non-fiction. Variety will attract them to the space. Also, ensure to place books in accessible areas, like low shelves.

3/6

Start slow

Don’t expect your child to finish a book in one sitting. That’s not how it works. It is important to foster the habit of reading. So, start slow. Begin with short, engaging stories or even comics. Children love pictures, so such books would be more appealing to them. Read together. Spending just 10–15 minutes a day is enough to establish this habit.

4/6

Make it fun

A reading session does not have to be boring. Active engagement during reading will keep them interested. Encourage children to predict the outcomes or describe characters. This can build critical thinking in them. You can also play memory games with them after a reading session. Helping children develop strong reading skills isn’t about strict schedules or goals. It’s all about nurturing curiosity, and most importantly, making reading fun.

5/6

Be their role model

Children learn by observing. If the children see you reading, they will automatically feel attracted to books. Make reading an enjoyable part of your daily life. You can also talk about the books you are reading. When kids see and understand that reading is not a chore but a source of joy and knowledge, they will start to read themselves.

6/6

Reading club

Reading could be an enjoyable activity for kids when they have their peers around. Encourage them to be part of a small group to read the same book. A guide (it could be you or any other adult who is a bookworm) can discuss what they like or didn’t like about the book. Also, encourage the children to talk about the interesting books they read.
