The right way to grow tomatoes (time, soil mix, growth tips)

Growing tomatoes is always the first choice of every gardener owing to its versatile uses and easy care routine. However, most gardeners fail to reap maximum benefits because of some silly mistakes made either while planting or during the course of growing the plant. In order to get rid of any problems and produce healthier and better plants, one must follow basic guidelines discussed in the following slides.

The ideal time to plant tomatoes

Timing plays an essential role in the entire process of growing tomatoes successfully. This vegetable is known to thrive in warm climates and needs a minimum temperature of 20° to 30° for its proper growth. Generally, it is recommended to start planting when the weather remains moderate. So, in India, the best time to plant tomatoes would be from late winter to midsummer. Avoid very cold or extremely hot conditions to increase chances of success.

Creating a perfect soil blend

As discussed earlier, soil quality has a significant influence on the health of tomato plants. It is advisable to use a mixture of garden soil, compost, sand/coco peat in equal parts. Compost will provide necessary nutrients, whereas the addition of sand/coco peat will help in proper aeration. For healthy growth, the soil should be loose and moderately acidic. In addition, it should contain no pebbles or rocks.

Planting and spacing tips

Spacing becomes particularly significant when planting tomato plants in pot s. Ensure that there is enough space between two plants for healthy growth. Sow the seeds at a depth of about half an inch. Moreover, if using pots, then use those measuring around 12-15 inches in diameter. Transplant them to their respective places once they have grown 2 or 3 inches tall. Proper spacing prevents plants from diseases.

Proper watering and support system

The most common mistake of overwatering causes root damage; hence, it is important not to water excessively. Just maintain proper soil moisture especially during the flowering and fruiting phase. They require 6-8 hours of exposure to direct sunlight every day for development. As the proper watering, sunlight, and the provision of adequate supports can greatly enhance fruit prod

Fertilization and Pest Control

Tomato plants must be fertilized constantly to remain healthy. You may apply compost or vermicompost once or twice monthly for ensuring adequate nutrient levels. Potassium fertilizers are useful for improving flower and fruit production. Be careful about pest damage, as it affects plants negatively. Neem oil or other natural repellents may be used for eliminating such infestations.
