The cross-ventilation trick that can cool your room without AC

When the heat becomes unbearable and the power cuts won’t cooperate, air conditioners aren’t always an option. But there’s a simple, effective technique that people have used for generations to keep their homes cool cross-ventilation. It does not require expensive devices nor does it cost money and yet, it is a technique that has been utilized by many for decades to maintain coolness inside a house.

What is it about?

In essence, cross ventilation is achieved when air enters the room from one opening and leaves through another, thereby forming a current of airflow throughout the room. For this process to happen, two or more openings on opposite sides or adjacent walls should be made.

3/5

The timing and location

The timing and location are crucial here. Mornings and evenings are ideal times to have your windows completely open as the temperatures outdoors will be lower during these hours. Windows should be kept half-closed in the middle of the day since it is hot outdoors, and you do not want hot air to enter your home. Curtains should either be white or light to allow air to pass.

4/5

Tricks to use

There are a few tricks to help your ventilation system work better. For example, placing an ice cube or damp cloth near the incoming air will cool it slightly. Leaving the doors in your apartment open will help the cool air travel into other rooms.

Another technique is that of pressure difference. If one window is left slightly open while the other remains more open, the air will rush in at greater speed, and hence the effectiveness will be improved. Moreover, the use of a fan facing outwards can also be utilized for expelling the hot air from the inside.

5/5

Why cross ventilation is important

Where there are frequent power cuts or the climate is just too unbearable, using cross ventilation becomes a necessary measure for surviving the day. It won’t replace air conditioning in its entirety, but it will definitely make things a lot easier, particularly during night time when all you require is a cool breeze blowing past you.

The best answers are usually those which require nothing more than common sense and natural instinct.

Disclaimer: Though cross-ventilation is one way to help you stay cool, depending on the weather and ventilation that is available, it may or may not be sufficient for cooling without an air conditioning unit.
