Step-by-step guide for growing chia seeds microgreens in your balcony garden

Growing chia microgreens indoors is one of the simplest methods of having fresh, nutrient-rich greens on a daily basis. Even if you are in a small apartment, your balcony can be converted into a mini-garden. With a tray, chia seeds, and a few days of maintenance, you can have your own microgreens filled with flavour, vitamins, and freshness. Here are a few simple steps to grow chia seeds microgreens in your balcony.

2/9

Choose a shallow tray

Begin with a shallow tray that has good drainage and airflow. A 10×20 cm tray is ideal for window ledges and balconies. Fill it with a light, well-draining growing medium such as coco peat or potting soil. Do not use deep containers since the seeds prefer growing in a thin layer of moist soil. A shallow tray will also prevent mold growth and overwatering.

3/9

Moisten the growing medium

Gently wet the soil or coco coir prior to planting so that it is damp but not dripping wet. Chia seeds are mucilaginous, and this means they create a gel coating when wet. Excess water can cause them to become sticky and prevent sprouting. Spray the water evenly to have ideal moisture levels. This is to guarantee healthy and even germination.

4/9

Spread seeds thickly and evenly

Scatter chia seeds thinly over the top of the soil. Attempt to create one, uniform layer in which the seeds are in close proximity but not stacked upon each other. Chia seeds can germinate in a very short time and create a soft, green mat of sprouts. Do not push them into the soil - simply place them on top. This permits proper air circulation and water uptake.

5/9

Cover to exclude light

For the initial 3-4 days, place the tray under a plate, lid, or another tray to keep out sunlight. This replicates the darkness of soil and makes the seeds root well before germinating. The cover also traps moisture inside, providing the ideal humid environment for germination. Check every day to make sure it's moist but not waterlogged.

6/9

Remove cover and provide light

After a few days, you’ll see tiny white sprouts emerging. Now, remove the cover and place the tray in bright, indirect sunlight or under a grow light. Chia microgreens need about 10-12 hours of light daily to turn green and strong. Rotate the tray occasionally to ensure all sides get equal light exposure for even growth.

7/9

Maintain moisture

Maintain the surface of the soil humid by misting very gently twice a day. Do not overwater, since the roots of chia are weak and too much moisture can cause mold. Use a spray bottle for best results in keeping the air humid. Ensure that your balcony has proper ventilation so the microgreens remain healthy and fresh while growing.

8/9

Harvest when ready

Your chia microgreens will be ready in 8-12 days when they grow to 1-3 inches and develop two bright green leaves. Harvest them with clean scissors cutting just above the soil level. Gently rinse with cool water and dry. They can be added to salads, smoothies, or sandwiches for a nutritious kick.

9/9

Clean and reuse the tray

Once you harvest, take away the spent soil and wash the tray well. This eliminates mold formation and gets your tray ready for your next crop. You can do it again right away - chia microgreens are fast-growing, making them ideal for ongoing harvesting. Balcony gardening is eco-friendly, enjoyable, and gets you in touch with nature at home.
