Prune these 10 plants in June for more blooms, healthier growth, and a lush garden throughout the monsoon season

June marks the arrival of the monsoon season across much of India, making it an important month for garden maintenance. Proper pruning helps eliminate dead and diseased growths, ensures better airflow, stimulates growth, and encourages flower formation. During the monsoon season, many ornamental plants grow actively, making June the perfect time for some pruning.

Hibiscus

One of the most widely grown flowering bushes in Indian gardens is hibiscus. By June, many hibiscus shrubs have developed weak stems, old flowers, and become leggy. Cutting out excess stems, dead wood and flowers stimulates the bushy growth of the plant and flower production. Moreover, proper pruning allows for better access to sunlight in the interior of the plant, preventing fungi from forming. As a result, pruning will lead to larger flowers.

3/8

Ixora

Ixora bushes are commonly grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas of India. Regular pruning of dead and faded clusters of blooms and light pruning of overgrown branches will result in a compact bush with fresh blooming. Such pruning not only improves the general appearance but also promotes new shoots to grow.

4/8

Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea has strong growth in warm weather and could get messy. In June, trimming can help keep the plant neat and trim out any tangled or dead branches. As bougainvillea forms flowers on new growth, proper pruning will promote new flower buds to form colorful bracts. It also helps improve circulation in the foliage and protects the plant from humidity. One does not need to prune heavily, but some shaping is good.

5/8

Holy Basil

The tulsi plant frequently develops flower spikes during the summer season. By pinching out flower buds and trimming the shoots in June, one can promote lush leaf development and avoid making the plant grow woody. This way, a healthier and more productive plant is maintained over the course of the season, while pruning also prolongs the plant's lifespan by postponing its reproductive phase. Ultimately, a bushier plant will have more leaf material available for everyday use.

6/8

Duranta

Duranta is a rapidly growing ornamental plant that is often used as a hedge. It is advisable to prune duranta in June to ensure a dense, tidy, and attractive appearance. If left unpruned, the shrub might grow sparse. Regular trimming promotes compact growth and enhances its value as a decorative hedge or border plant.

7/8

Jasmine (Mogra)

The flower of Mogra and other types of jasmine would thrive if they undergo pruning right after their flowering season. Cutting out old flower buds and excess stems promotes better air circulation, which results in new growth and healthier flowers. Often times, pruning also leads to stronger scents that develop during the monsoon season. The newly sprouted flowers grow stronger and produce better results than older ones.

8/8

Roses

The month of June is an ideal time for light pruning of rose plants, and deadheading is equally beneficial. The removal of old, dead blooms, as well as thin and diseased canes, prevents fungi development due to high humidity. Such pruning stimulates plant growth and promotes blooming. Thus, the energy of the plant will be utilized for producing new buds rather than supporting old ones.
