These five are perfect for busy people or those new to gardening

Not all of us have the time or the patience for fussy plants. Some days, just remembering to water your garden can feel like an achievement. That’s where low-maintenance plants come in. These green companions don’t need constant attention, perfect soil, or even daily watering. They just want a little sunlight, the occasional drink, and a quiet place to grow.

If you’ve ever felt like plants are too much work, you’re not alone. Watering schedules, soil types, sunlight directions it can all get overwhelming. But not all plants are needy. Some just want a corner, a bit of light, and the occasional drink. These five are perfect for busy people or those new to gardening.

2/6

Snake plant and aloe vera

If you always forget to water, start here. Snake plants don’t mind neglect and will survive low light, while aloe vera thrives in sun and barely needs water. They're both hardy, stylish, and great for indoor corners or sunny windowsills. Aloe is a desert plant, so it’s built for neglect. It loves sunlight, doesn’t need much water, and doubles as a natural remedy for cuts and burns. Keep it in a sunny spot, water only when the soil is completely dry, and it’ll thrive. It’s perfect for patios, windowsills, and balconies.

3/6

Lavender and coreopsis

Lavender smells amazing, survives on little water, and thrives in poor soil. Coreopsis is just as low-maintenance, with cheerful yellow blooms that last for months. Once they start flowering, they just keep going. Deadheading (removing old flowers) can encourage more blooms, but even if you skip that, they’ll still show up for you. With the right spot, it’ll bloom beautifully and bring bees and butterflies to your garden. Plus, it’s drought-tolerant and keeps pests away. Both are great if you want a colorful garden with minimal effort.

4/6

Zinnias and marigolds

Want flowers without fuss? Zinnias and marigolds bloom generously and don’t need special care. They’re tough against pests, love the sun, and will brighten any patch of dirt or pot. Bonus, they attract bees and butterflies. Marigolds are almost impossible to mess up. They bloom for months, tolerate heat, and can grow in poor soil. Their scent naturally repels pests like mosquitoes and aphids. Just plant them somewhere sunny, water when the topsoil dries, and enjoy their cheerful yellow and orange blooms.

5/6

Basil and mint

These two grow fast and don’t ask for much. Just a sunny spot and regular water. Basil loves warm weather and adds instant flavor to meals. Mint is a little wild, so it’s best in a pot unless you want it taking over your yard. In fact, it grows so well that it can take over your garden so keep it in a pot if you don’t want it running wild. Bonus: it smells amazing and is great for teas and drinks. Either way, they’re satisfying to grow and use.

6/6

Sedum and spider plant

Sedum is a succulent that handles heat and neglect like a champ. It grows slowly and steadily, even in dry soil. Spider plants are houseplant classics, easy, adaptable, and always sprouting baby plants you can share or replant. It comes in ground-covering types and upright varieties, both incredibly tough. It doesn’t mind poor soil and rarely needs watering. Once it’s settled in, it just grows with quiet confidence.

It’s a fun, forgiving plant that works well in hanging baskets or planters.
