How to grow sweet-smelling jasmine plants in a balcony garden

Fragrant jasmine plants add a certain kind of magic to a balcony garden. The white flowers and the fragrance of jasmine plants are enough to convert the smallest balcony garden into a peaceful haven. Jasmine plants are ideal for container gardens and flourish when given thoughtful attention and care. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, growing jasmine plants on your balcony garden is a great way to enjoy the benefits of nature and beauty right outside your home.

2/8

Choose the right variety

Select jasmine varieties that are suitable for potted plants, such as Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) or Jasminum polyanthum, which are suitable for potted plants and will provide you with plenty of fragrant blooms. Some jasmine varieties are climbers and will need support, so think about your balcony space and whether you want vines or a bushy plant.

3/8

Pick a good pot

Select a pot that is at least 12-14 inches deep and has multiple drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating, which may cause root rot. A deeper pot will allow the roots to develop and help the plant thrive during the summer months. Placing pebbles or broken ceramics at the bottom of the pot will ensure proper drainage and prevent the pot from tipping over, which may be a problem for tall jasmine plants.

4/8

Use well-draining soil

Jasmine plants require well-draining soil for proper growth. Mix garden soil with compost or organic manure and sand/perlite to make well-draining soil. This will help prevent waterlogged soil. Well-draining soil provides the necessary nutrients to the plant and will also help prevent root and flower issues due to heavy soil. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal for jasmine plants.

5/8

Provide adequate sunlight

Position the potted jasmine plant in a spot where it receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight. Morning sunlight is particularly helpful, and it should receive shade during the hottest part of the day. Insufficient sunlight will cause the plant to grow weakly and produce fewer flowers.

6/8

Water properly

Water the jasmine plant when the top soil layer, measuring 1-2 inches, is dry to the touch. It is essential to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as this will cause root rot and make the stems wilt, respectively. In summer, the plant will require more frequent watering due to faster growth.

7/8

Support, fertilise and prune

Climbing jasmine requires support from a trellis or balcony railing to allow the vines to climb. Fertilise your plant with a balanced fertiliser high in phosphorus every month during the growing season to encourage blooming. Once the plant has finished blooming, remove dead ends and weak growth to encourage a bushy habit and more blooms in the next growing season.

8/8

Monitor for pests and provide seasonal care

Watch for pests such as aphids or whiteflies, and treat with organic pesticides such as neem oil if necessary. Modify watering and light exposure with the seasons; your jasmine may require protection from intense heat or cold. Proper care will keep your plant free from fungal diseases and keep your balcony smelling wonderful during blooming seasons.

Growing scented jasmine plants in planters on your balcony is an excellent way to bring nature to your small space. With the proper plant, soil, sunlight, watering, support and care, your plant will bloom, and your balcony will be filled with beautiful and fragrant flowers.
