How to grow sweet smelling jasmine flower for summer

Jasmine is among the most popular flowering plants because of its sweet smelling and beautiful white flower. You can have a healthy jasmine plant to fill your garden or your balcony with its sweet fragrance and beautiful flowers especially during the summer season. Nevertheless, growing a healthy plant of jasmine requires attention to the light, water, soil, support, and nutrients to grow it. These are some steps to follow while cultivating jasmine. Let's have a look on them.

Choose the right variety

Selecting the appropriate jasmine type increases your chances of success. Some varieties like Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) and Jasminum polyanthum are highly fragrant and ideal for container or garden growth. Pick a variety based on your space, compact types for pots or climbing types for trellises.

Use a suitable pot and soil

Jasmine prefers a pot that’s at least 10-14 inches deep with good drainage holes. Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil by mixing garden soil with compost, cocopeat, perlite, or sand. This mix ensures roots don’t stay waterlogged and get enough nutrients and oxygen.

Provide the right amount of sunlight

Sunlight is critical for jasmine blooms. Place your plant where it gets 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Morning sun is ideal, as strong midday heat can stress the plant in summer. Adequate light fuels photosynthesis and encourages abundant flowers.

Water the plant correctly

Water jasmine regularly to maintain even soil moisture, but never let the soil become soggy, which can cause root rot. In hot summer weather, you might need to water more frequently, usually when the top 1-2 inches of soil feels dry to the touch.

Support climbers

If your jasmine variety is a climber, provide support such as a trellis, railing, or bamboo stakes. As new shoots grow, gently tie them to the support so they can climb upward, which encourages more flowers along the stems.

Fertilise for more flowers

Feeding your jasmine helps enhance growth and flower production. During the growing season (spring and summer), use a balanced fertiliser rich in phosphorus and potassium about every 3-4 weeks. You can also use organic options like compost tea or banana peel water.

Prune regularly

Pruning keeps your jasmine plant healthy and promotes new blooms. After each flowering cycle or during early spring, trim away dead or weak stems. This encourages bushier growth and more flower buds.

Watch for pests and protect the plant

In summer, pests like aphids, mites, or whiteflies can attack jasmine. Keep an eye out and treat with organic solutions like neem oil if needed. Also, provide some shade during extreme heat to prevent flower wilting.

Planting jasmine flowers that have a strong smell and doing it in the summer time may be a beautiful experience that is rewarding in case you do it right. Using the appropriate type of plants and jasmine, sufficient sunlight and water, and soil, and a consistent focus on pruning and feeding will allow one to enjoy rich green leaves and gorgeous flowers. Jasmine plant can fill your space with fragrance and beauty with regular care during summer time.
