How to grow spinach year-round in small spaces

Many people have been adopting home vegetable gardens in recent years. Apartment owners and individuals with little space in their properties have shown great interest in planting crops on balconies or terraces. Spinach is a common green veggie that is easy to plant and harvest due to its rapid growing process. According to gardening experts, individuals will be able to grow spinach all year round provided they control the light intensity, watering, and temperature conditions. Growing spinach can become possible even on balconies, windowsills, terraces, and tiny kitchen gardens.

2/7

Use suitable containers with proper drainage

The roots of spinach can be grown in shallow containers since they do not need much soil to thrive. According to the advice of gardening experts, one should use pots, grow bags, wooden boxes and recycled containers. They should have drainage holes in order to avoid waterlogging. People who live in small spaces often use railings to attach containers for growing vegetables or plant spinach on vertical racks. The proper drainage is still needed to ensure healthy spinach growth, as roots may rot rapidly in water.

3/7

Use loose and nutrient-rich soil

Gardening experts say that the healthy growth of spinach mostly depends on good soil composition. People growing vegetables should opt for loose soil with proper drainage and nutrients. Usually, the soil consists of compost, coco peat, and organic manure to facilitate root development. If the soil is too dense, the leaves of spinach may become smaller and unhealthy over time. For example, spinach is cultivated for its edible leaves, which means that the soil should contain sufficient amounts of nitrogen.

4/7

Provide proper sunlight without hot temperatures

Spinach can flourish in light conditions, provided it is not exposed to high temperatures. According to gardening experts, individuals who are growing spinach should give plants several hours of light per day but avoid high temperatures that cause stress or bolting of spinach leaves. It is common practice to position containers in such places where spinach is exposed to morning light only. Partial shading may be necessary during the warm season.

5/7

Maintain a proper watering regime

People should provide consistent soil moisture in order to grow healthy leaves. Experts in gardening suggest that one needs to add moisture whenever the top layer of the soil is slightly dry. Overwatering can harm the roots quickly, which is why small-space gardening requires special attention from homeowners. It is possible to mulch the ground with dry leaves or coco peat in order to maintain appropriate levels of moisture.

6/7

Harvest leaves regularly to prolong plant life

Another advantage of spinach is that it continues to produce fresh leaves even after harvest. Gardening experts recommend removing outer leaves gently instead of uprooting the whole plant once the leaves are ready to be harvested. This allows spinach to regrow and prolongs the process of harvesting. Individuals usually cultivate spinach by planting new seeds every few weeks.

7/7

Avoid pests and unfavourable temperatures

Although spinach is easy to grow, one still needs to pay attention to insects that may damage the crop. People can check their spinach leaves regularly in order to detect any insects and prevent further problems. There are many natural ways to get rid of bugs that eat leaves. Neem oil or a mild soap solution are usually effective against aphids, snails, and fungus gnats. When there are some extremes of weather conditions, containers should be brought indoors for protection.
