The quiet power of texture in modern interiors
Texture is playing a bigger role in how we design and experience our homes today. "Texture is not just about appearance, but about feeling," says Giulia Baima Bollone, Director, Embassy Interiors. “When surfaces are layered with intention, they shape how a space is perceived and lived in."
She explains that modern homes are moving beyond isolated design features. "It is no longer about adding one textured wall or accent piece. It is about how materials work together to create depth and character," Giulia says. According to her, elements such as fluted panels, lime-wash walls, raw stone and bouclé fabrics help create interiors that feel balanced and engaging.
"Fluted surfaces introduce rhythm and structure through light and shadow," she notes. "They add interest without being overly decorative." Lime-wash walls, she says, bring a different quality. "Lime-wash creates softness through its subtle tonal variations. It diffuses light gently and adds quiet warmth to a room."
Natural materials are equally important. "Raw stone brings authenticity and a sense of permanence. Its imperfections connect the home to nature,” Giulia explains. To soften stronger materials, she recommends tactile fabrics. “Bouclé adds comfort and warmth. It invites touch and makes a space feel more relaxed," she says.
For Giulia, texture is closely linked to emotion. "People respond instinctively to surfaces. Texture influences mood, scale and comfort," she adds. "When materials complement one another, they create homes that feel thoughtful, layered and meaningful."
