How to stop overthinking?

May is observed as Mental health awareness Month which makes it necessary to understand the importance of mental health. Overthinking, or the tendency to excessively analyze or dwell on a problem or situation, is a common issue among many individuals. While some level of analysis can be useful, overthinking can often lead to stress, anxiety, and negative effects on mental health.

Archana Singhal, Educator, Counsellor Family Therapist Member of WICCI, and Founder of Mindwell Counsel says, “The main reason is generic but people might still be unaware of how minor difficulties can lead to a severe situation. Anxiety, perfectionism, and lack of control are some triggers to overthinking. Thankfully, there are many effective treatment options for overthinking. Here are some ways to overcome it:
2/6

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

CBT can help individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and develop more positive and adaptive ways of thinking.

3/6

Mindfulness Practice:

Mindfulness meditation can help individuals learn to focus their attention on the present moment, reducing overthinking. Even a small smiley ball has huge effects.

4/6

Exercise:

“Exercise can reduce stress and anxiety, helping individuals to break the cycle of overthinking anxiety or stress,” says Singhal, who is also a Yoga coach and a member of 'The National Psychological Wellbeing Council' and 'The Councillor Council of India'.
5/6

Medication:

In some cases, medication may be prescribed to treat underlying anxiety or depression that contributes to overthinking.
6/6

The takeaway:

According to Singhal, “Overthinking can be a difficult habit to break, but it is possible with the right treatment and support. By identifying the underlying causes of overthinking and developing effective coping strategies, individuals can reduce the negative effects of overthinking and improve their mental health and well-being.”
