Tips for gum care

Maintain the health of your gums by adopting proper oral hygiene and dietary habits. By incorporating the following care tips into your daily routine, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of experiencing gum disease.

2/9

Brush your teeth daily

According to Dr Madhavi Shetty, Endodontist and co-founder The Func Dent, “Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes each time. Opt for a toothpaste enriched with fluoride, a mineral that fortifies enamel and shields your teeth from cavities. Switch to an electric toothbrush to make the process fun and quick. Researchers found that electric toothbrushes are better in removing dental plaque.”

3/9

Floss daily

Floss once a day to remove plaque and food particles that your toothbrush can’t reach. The act of flossing is more important than the time of day you floss – pick a few spare minutes to get it done whenever you can.

4/9

Use fluoridated mouthwash

According to Dr. Shetty, “After brushing your teeth, one must use a mouthwash that contains fluoride for an added layer of protection. Mouthwash not only helps to eliminate bacteria and food particles but also ensures your tooth enamel is safeguarded with the help of fluoride.”

5/9

Eat a balanced, whole-food diet

Reduce your intake of sugary, starchy and chewy foods, which can all contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. Foods with fiber, such as apples, celery, and leafy greens, are great because they require a lot of chewing. Also, be aware that the more alcohol you drink, the higher your risk for gum disease.

6/9

Rinse your mouth out after eating

“It’s not necessary for you to brush your teeth after every meal or snack. Remember to rinse your mouth with clean water after eating. Rinsing removes sugars and food particles lingering in the mouth,” says Dr. Shetty.

7/9

Quit smoking

Smoking and tobacco use is a leading cause of gum disease. Because smoking weakens the immune system, your body will have a harder time fighting off infection and healing quickly.

8/9

Visit your dentist regularly

See your dentist regularly for professional cleanings. A deep clean removes plaque and tartar you may have missed while brushing and flossing. Additionally, your dentist can identify and treat early symptoms of gum disease before they cause further damage.

9/9

Pull Out Bacteria with Oil

“Oil pulling can help reduce the bad bacteria and remove plaque in your mouth. To perform oil pulling, heat up a tablespoon of coconut oil, sesame oil or sunflower oil and swish it around in your mouth for a duration of up to 10 minutes,” advises Dr. Shetty.

By following these recommendations, you can take better care of your gums. Remember to consult with a dental professional to receive personalized advice and guidance tailored to your specific oral health needs. Your dentist will play a vital role in ensuring your teeth and gums stay healthy and strong.
