Water and weight loss

Without water, life on Earth is not possible. It is the basic element required for the survival of all living beings. About 55 per cent of our body weight consists of water, which makes it compulsory to drink a sufficient amount of fluid in a day to maintain the balance and flush out toxins from the body. But its benefits do not end here. Several studies suggest that water can help to speed up metabolism and can aid in weight loss. In fact, there is a particular way to drink water for shedding kilos which is quite famous among the Japanese, referred to as Japanese water therapy.

The Japanese water therapy

In this famous Japanese water therapy, it is required to drink several glasses of water at room temperature the first thing in the morning. Apart from this, one has to follow a strict eating pattern, in which the person is allowed to eat in a 15 minutes window and the break between meals and snacks are quite long.

How water helps in weight loss

Several studies suggest that water can help with weight loss. As per one of the studies, adults trying to come into shape when drank 2.1 cups (500 mL) of water 30 minutes before a meal, ate 13 per cent less food than adults who didn’t drink fluids before eating. Another study found that replacing sugar-laden beverages with water can reduce calorie intake that may otherwise promote weight gain.

How this therapy helps in weight loss

It is believed that the hydration component in the water may play a major role in helping to shed kilos. Water, as we all know, has a filling effect. Drinking a glass of water before mealtime can prevent us from overeating and even curb the craving between the meal. This can help to stay on track and prevent weight gain caused by consuming extra calories. Not only water intake, but the strict eating window breaks also help to consume fewer calories. All these factors together support weight loss and help you stay on track.

After waking up in the morning, one has to drink approximately 180 ml of room-temperature water. This has to be about 45 minutes before taking the first meal. Then throughout the day, depending on the thirst level one has to keep themselves hydrated.

The eating window is restricted to only 15 minutes and there should be at least a 2 hours gap between the meals. The most important thing is that there is no restriction on what you eat. Whatever you consume, it just needs to be healthy.

The bottom line

Although this therapy is quite famous in Japan and now has even gained popularity in different parts of the world, scientists have mixed opinions about it. As per some, it is effective, while others believe that eating in 15 minutes windows may not be effective in long term weight loss. In 15-minutes, the gut cannot send a signal to the brain that it is full. As a result, the person will end up eating more food. Besides, eating slowly and chewing your food properly have always been considered beneficial for weight loss and good health. As per some experts, Japanese water therapy may lead to initial weight loss, due to low-calorie intake, but it would not be sustainable. Another downside of this therapy is the risk of overhydration. Drinking too much water can lower the sodium concentration in the body to a dangerous level. This can lead to nausea, vomiting, seizures and coma. It is better to consult an expert in the field before trying this therapy.
