The secret to Hopper's five-stone weight loss journey

As we enter the realm of 'Vecna', the main antagonist in the Stranger Things season 4, apart from the brutal killings and the twists and turns, we can't help but notice the major transformation Hopper has gone through.

During an interview on BBC Breakfast today, he reveals, "So yeah this past season I lost, I think it was 80 pounds."

"You know at the end of season three I was about 270 pounds and then when we came into this season I was 190," he adds.

Furthermore, the actor recently took to Instagram to talk about his weight loss journey along with his trainer and physical therapist David Higgins.

The idea behind the transformation

Hopper, a character played by actor David Harbour, is shown to have met a tragic end in the last episode of season 3. But as we turn to season 4, we find out that he mysteriously fell into a portal and ends up in a Russian prison. And given that prison is not that pleasant place to live in, Harbour worked hard to show what the character had been through.

Taking to Instagram, he said, "When I took my shirt off, I wanted to reveal this body that had been hardened by this prison, you know, a guy who was more brutal but was also thinner and had not been eating as well."

The challenges

In 2019, Harbour had suffered an Achilles rupture, which made it hard for the actor to train and workout. It was especially difficult during all the stunt work that was to be done for Black Widow. "I was in pain a lot... I just thought I was an old guy," he said. "I was 44 at the time, and I thought it was just over," he said.

But it was on the Black Widow set itself, where he met Higgins, who helped him through this journey of healing and overcoming his injuries.

"I'm a bear, bull-like physique." Harbour said. "The idea that I would get down to some lean light heavyweight was insane to me."

Workout regime

As per Harbour and Higgins, the duo put together a plan, which included mobility and activation exercises, kettlebell workouts, Pilates and steady-state cardio.

“It really did add up,” he said.

“It was the simple things that I continued to do that made a difference," he adds.

What was the diet Harbour followed

Intermittent fasting was the key to Harbour's diet routine.

"It's kind of the fad diet of the moment, but it really did work for me," he said.

"It wasn't so much about what I was eating, it was about the how, and that was much better for my lifestyle, because I don't cook, and all these guys in fitness are like 'you've got to steam chicken breast and vegetables and a little bit of rice,' and it's just not my vibe. I did find, though, because I was really big, the weight came off pretty easily," he explains

Fitness lessons he learnt

"There's health, and then there's aesthetics, like how you look, and then there's how you feel, and I think sometimes those are the same, and sometimes they're very different," Harbour said.

"My whole relationship with my body changed... I felt I could trust this machine more, I could do things... It's those little things I'm grateful for. I don't have aches in my hip and knee anymore because I've strengthened my core. Those are the things that are really invaluable," he added.
