How World’s longest living people stay in shape

In a world where diseases and infections have become so common, wouldn't it be surprising to know that certain communities live a very long and healthy life? World's Blue Zone regions - Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; Loma Linda, California; and Okinawa, Japan - have the lowest rates of diseases and therefore, they are home to people who live over a 100 years. Additionally, not only are the residents extremely healthy, but they're also the fittest, which is why it is important to note their lifestyle habits and routines. For those trying to shed some kilos, here are some of their dietary and daily habits.

Prioritize eating fruits and vegetables

Blue Zone centenarians seem to have no trouble incorporating healthy veggies and hydrating fruits into their diet. Vegetables like spinach, broccoli, brussel sprouts, green peas, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes are great for weight loss. They're rich in various nutrients including potassium, dietary fiber, folate, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

Similarly, if you like snacking in between your meals, switch to fruits rather than processed chips and sugary treats.

3/6

Choose whole-grains

Researchers have found that people from all Blue Zone areas ensure they consume foods that are high in fibre. They opt for whole grain foods that are loaded with fibre, protein, B vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals such as iron, zinc, copper, and magnesium. Besides aiding in weight loss, whole grains also help minimize the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain cancers.

4/6

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water not only keeps your body hydrated but it also cuts down on cravings and improves satiety. Scientists who have studied the region of Nicoya in Costa Rica have attributed most of the people's healthy lives to the amount of water they drink.

5/6

Portion control is key

Minding what you eat is important, you must also keep a note of how much you eat. Eating small portions of foods helps keep excess calories at bay. The people in Japan's Okinawa are said to follow hara hachi bu, an ancient Confucian practice of eating until you're only 80 percent full.

6/6

Be physically active

It is believed that people from the Blue Zone regions don't usually go to the gym. However, they're still one of the most active people on the planet. How so? Because they're constantly moving, engaging in works that require physical movements such as gardening, walking, or biking.
