“I want to be on the cover of Men's Health by March of 2026. That's my new goal. I want to have one of the biggest transformations,” said Country singer Jelly Roll’s as he spoke passionately about his weight loss journey on his wife Bunni XO's podcast ‘Dumb Blonde’.
The ‘Need a Favor’ singer also added that he is speaking about his
weight loss journey publicly because he wants to be honest about his struggles. He also spoke about how people undergoing weight loss are equally shamed. “I think that people that become as big as I became when they lose the weight, they're kind of ashamed. They're so ashamed that they go hide and lose the weight. And then they come back out and they don't really know how to interact with the world, looking different or feeling different, and they kind of got to find their whole new way. I wanted to lose it in front of everybody. I want to talk about it. It's on my daily roll vlogs,” he added.
The singer who weighed 550lbs began his weight loss journey in 2022. With a healthy diet and exercise regime, he lost 110 lbs. Roll’s further added on the podcast, that he wants the people to know that, “I didn't become successful because of my weight. I became successful in spite of it. I somehow managed to be this successful carrying 550 pounds.
That's insane."
Jelly Roll’s weight loss journey is quite inspiring, and his future goals shine even brighter. Here are some of the key takeaways from Jelly Roll’s weight loss journey.
How it started?Jason DeFord, who goes by the stage name Jelly Roll, started his weight loss journey in 2022. He has always been vocal about his struggle with weight. While on The Bobby Bones Show, he revealed that his mother gave him the nickname Jelly Roll, as he was a ‘chubby baby’. Talking to Music Mayhem later that year, the singer said that his goal for 2023 was to ‘conquer the demon’, which was his weight. In 2024, he told People that he lost 110 lbs, by shifting his priorities to a healthier lifestyle.
Run baby run! Jelly Roll stuck to the basics, starting his journey with simple steps like
walking and running. He started training for the 2 Bears 5K in Los Angeles. The singer was 'really emotionally' as he completed the 3.1-mile run. He recalled about how he couldn't walk a mile in January when he started training for the 5K. After wrapping the the 2 Bears race, he lost about 50 to 70 pounds.
By mid-March, he started running two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. He also did 20-30 minutes of sauna, and six minutes of cold plunge every day.
Eating clean, and keeping it simpleFor Jelly Roll, keeping an eye on what he eats, has done miracul. He started swapping his favourite meals with some healthier options. His nutritionist, Chef Ian Larios would make him a banana bowl made with sliced bananas, Manuka honey and some Stevia-sweetened dark chocolate grated over the top, prior to the show.
Jelly Roll also had high-protein meals. The singer absolutely loves Nashville hot chicken, and the nutritionist made it healthy by air frying the chicken. He skipped the oil and batter, and instad seasoned it with potato and rice flour. The french fries on the side were boiled in bone broth for additional protein.
Said ‘No’ to OzempicWhile talking on the podcast, Jelly Roll stated that he wasn’t keen about weightloss drugs such as Ozempic, and he wanted to do it ‘naturaly’.
"Every doctor I've talked to is for it. They said it helps. I just was afraid of it... As a singer, few things scare me more than acid reflux. Like, you'll watch me get up out of a bed, I'll burp and wake up panicked and go take something for it. You know? Because that stuff will just rip the vocal cords. So I want to be very clear that I've done it naturally, but it wasn't out of stubbornness or trying to prove a point. If it helps you, go get it. But for me, I was just petrified of the side effects of it,” he said.
His struggles with weight In an Instagram
note in 2018, Jelly Roll spoke about his struggles with weight, and how in 2015, he weighed over 500 lbs. “In 2015 I weighed over 500 lbs. Not sure how much, the Dr’s scale only weighed to 500 lbs. They suggested I go to a meat processor or truck stop to get my actual weight. It was the one of the most embarrassing days of my life, and the bottom line I had done it to myself.” He also confessed to spiraling out of control and dealing it all with more food, drugs, and liquor. Later in 2016, he started the weight loss journey and lost around 200lbs. But by 2018, he gained 80lbs back, and finally decided to take matters into his own hands. “TODAY is the day I start over and fight my life long demon again. I’ve been obese since I was a small child. All I’ve ever known was being fat, and I’m f***ing miserable,” he said. However, it was his wish of living a fulfilling and enriching life, that made him lose weight, “I wanna skydive, bungee jump, ride a bull, parasail, ride roller coasters, I want to LIVE a normal life and have a normal relationship with food. I fight addictions and alcoholism every day,” he wrote.
The biggest takeaway from Jelly Roll’s weight loss journey? Consistency. No matter, how little the step is go forward.
