When it comes to weight loss, there are several foods, drinks and exercises that can aid your goals, of which horse gram or kulthi dal is extremely effective. It is a lentil or a bean that is said to treat old, cough, kidney stones, asthma, and menstrual irregularity and also known to aid weight loss, especially because of the nutrients present in this superfood!

Horse gram is an excellent source of protein, which is extremely crucial for your weight loss progress. Not only are high-protein foods known to boost metabolism, but they also curb cravings and reduce high-calorie intake. A 100gms of horse gram is said to contain 22gms of protein, among other nutrients.

Horse gram is said to be very low in calories, which is why it makes for a great food item to be added to your weight loss diet. A low-calorie meal is always beneficial for weight loss and can also keep health issues at bay.

In addition to being rich in protein and low in calories, horse gram is also very high in fibre, which is not only great for your digestive health, but also for weight loss. 100g of horse gram contains 8g of fiber, which is why it should be added to your diet. Besides, it will also help curb hunger and unhealthy food cravings.

Boosts metabolism

Most importantly, horse gram, because it is rich in protein and fibre, helps in boosting and improving metabolism. This happens because the body burns more energy processing protein than carbs or fats. Being able to digest protein faster helps boost metabolism quicker and more efficiently.

How to prepare horse gram dal?

Firstly, soak horse gram in 1 cup of water overnight. Next day, add the soaked horse gram dal and 3 cups of water in a pressure cooker. Add salt to taste and turmeric powder. Cover the lid and pressure cook for 6-7 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally. In a pan, heat ghee, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add asafoetida and let it cook for a few seconds. Saute with some ginger garlic paste, chopped onion, tomatoes, red chilli powder, salt and coriander powder. Cover the pan and let it cook for 2-3 minutes. Add mashed horse gram in the pan and let it simmer for about 3 to 4 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.
