Vitamin overdose is harmful!

Meeting daily requirement of essential vitamins and minerals is always recommended through natural diet. However, there are many who feel their diet may not be giving them these required nutrients and so they resort to vitamin supplements to make up for lost nutrients. While these nutrients are essential to our health, mindlessly popping multi-vitamin capsules can be toxic. Let’s see how! (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)

Overdose of Vitamin A

As Vitamin A is water-soluble (which gets easily dissolved in water), our body can store it in excess amounts, mainly in liver. Excess of Vitamin A can cause allergic reactions. Your face, lips, tongue or throat can swell. It can also lead to increased intracranial pressure, dizziness, nausea, joint pains and even coma! (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)

Overdose of Vitamin C

Like Vitamin A, this is also a water-soluble vitamin. Excess of Vitamin C may cause gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, kidney stones, insomnia, headache and heartburn. (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)

Overdose of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Overdose of this vitamin has many adverse effects. It can lead to poor appetite, dehydration, nausea, weak muscles and even diarrhoea. If you take too much of Vitamin D, you can also suffer from cardiovascular diseases. (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)

Overdose of Vitamin E

Vitamin E, if taken in excess, can cause nausea, feeling of tiredness, headache and can develop mild rashes. Also, you can get blurry vision and severe pain in stomach. You can also face severe dizziness and trouble in breathing. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Vitamin K

This is yet another vitamin that can cause many side effects if taken in excess. The side effects may include the following: Enlarged liver, paleness, increased sweating, difficulty in breathing, stiffness in muscles, body swelling, irregular breathing, decreased movement or activity, swelling of eyelids or redness of skin. Overdose of Vitamin B2

Riboflavin or Vitamin B2 may cause the urine to turn yellow-orange colour. When taken in high dosage, it may cause diarrhoea and increase in urine frequency. Signs of allergic reactions like hives, swelling on face, lips and tongue may also appear. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Vitamin B3

Niacin overdose can also have several side-effects. It includes itching, abdominal pain, severe skin flushing with dizziness (primarily on face, arms and chest), gout, diarrhoea or fast heartbeat. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Vitamin B6

There are some serious side effects of over dosage of Vitamin B6 or Pyridoxine. You may feel numbness in your feet and clumsy hands. There is a reduced sensation of touch, temperature and vibration. There is also loss of balance and coordination. Sometimes, you may feel heaviness in breath, swelling on your face, lips and throat. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Vitamin B12

There are various potential side effects of surplus intake of Vitamin B12. It may cause numbness in arms, hands and face. It can also cause damage to the optic nerve. A research showed that excess Vitamin B12 can increase the risk of developing prostate cancer. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Folate

Vitamin B9 or Folate has a few side effects if taken excessively. High dosage can cause stomach problems, skin reactions, seizures and sleep disturbances. (Image Courtesy: Pixabay)

Overdose of Biotin

Biotin or B7 is considered to be safe for most people when taken appropriately. Excess dosage of Biotin can increase the need to urinate and unusual sweating. It can also cause mild nausea, cramps in stomach and diarrhoea.

The daily level of vitamin intake varies from person to person. A healthy adult will have different needs from an elderly or a child. Avoid self prescribing vitamin supplements and always consult your doctor.
