The toxic air

Diwali is around the corner. But before you get immersed in all the festivity and celebrations, keep in mind that the air quality across the country is touching a new low with every passing day.

2/10

Respiratory diseases

The air pollution is especially dangerous for those suffering from respiratory diseases including asthma, allergic rhinitis and the fatal (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) COPD.

Here is a list of a few precautions that you must follow in order to safeguard yourself against the deadly air:

3/10

Keep a safe distance from crackers

It is a commonplace knowledge that you need to completely avoid crackers and the areas where crackers are going to be burst. The harmful pollutants emitted out of the crackers pose a serious health hazard. So, steer clear of crackers.

4/10

Watch the dust

Keep in mind that even if it is the post-Diwali smog which is deadlier, actual Diwali celebrations begin a week earlier. This is the time when everyone gears up to clean their households and surroundings. Since dust is swept up during the whole cleaning process, you need to maintain a safe distance from it.

5/10

Leave the city

If you are extremely sensitive to air pollution and smog, it is strongly advised that you head towards hill stations for Diwali, where the air is relatively cleaner.

6/10

Keep a check on the pollution levels

Make use of your smartphone and install air-quality apps to keep a real-time check on the air pollution levels. Always check the air pollution levels before stepping out of your home.

7/10

Air purifier

Install an air purifier in your house and office to ensure that you are breathing a cleaner air.

8/10

See your doctor

Before getting all decked up for the festival, do pay a visit to your doctor for a routine check-up. Ask your doctor what else could be done to ensure that your respiratory system is strong enough to deal with toxic air. Invest in good pollution-control masks and air purifiers.

9/10

Keep your medications handy

If you are already suffering from a respiratory problem, be warned that the symptoms might aggravate during Diwali, thanks to the toxic smoke. Keep your inhaler, mask and other important medications handy and if possible carry them with you, where ever you go.

10/10

The bottom line

In order to have a happy Diwali, it is important to stay safe. Hence, take all the necessary precautions to ensure that you are able to celebrate the festival of lights without falling sick.
