How sausages and salamis affect your health

The biggest issue with foods today is the labels they come with. They may be ‘fat-free’ or ‘sugar-free’ or ‘gluten-free’. So much so that these food labels run the marketplace full of already confused consumers. One food that has made its way onto the millennials’ plate is processed food. And to fill their tummy in this fast-paced life, millennials often end up consuming too much of anything that is tasty and promises ‘no weight gain’.

2/7

Are salamis and sausages as healthy as they propose to be?

Sausages and salamis are a perfect example of this. Not only are they easily available but also affordable for the working population. All you need to do is sear it on the pan or microwave it and you’re good to go. But is the consumption of this alleged protein source as healthy as it is proposed to be? Maybe not. Let us find out.

3/7

Highly processed

HIGHLY PROCESSED: Sausages and salamis are highly processed meats which can harm your body in the long run. To increase the durability of sausages and salamis, manufacturers often add ingredients which may seem harmless right now but cause permanent damage to your digestion process.

4/7

Unknown flavour add-ons

UNKNOWN FLAVOUR ADD-ONS: To make salamis and sausages tastier and addictive, unknown food enhancers are often added. These contain chemical compositions which increase the taste of a processed meat and are often dangerous.

5/7

Sodium level

SODIUM LEVEL: High levels of salts are added to salamis and sausages to maintain their taste quotient. However, consumption of sodium in large quantities can lead to health problems like hypertension and heart conditions.

6/7

Can have synthetic material as well

CAN HAVE SYNTHETIC MATERIAL AS WELL: Though there have been many studies that have stated the presence of synthetic materials in processed meats such as salamis and sausages, no solid evidence has yet been found. Sausages and salamis are usually made of intestines of pork, beef, and chicken. However, there are chances that these also contain synthetic material to increase its quantity.

7/7

Nitrosamines

NITROSAMINES: Processed meats form nitrosamines when they are exposed to high heat. For example, if you fry the sausages or salamis before consuming it or microwave it for a longer period of time. As per studies, nitrosamines are a major reason for bowel cancer.
