Choose the right dosha

You must be well aware of the health benefits of Ayurveda. The traditional Indian system of medicine is in practice for some 3,000 years and has now gained popularity even in different parts of the world. Ayurveda is not a complex practice and also extremely beneficial, and that is why it is famous among people. It is based on two things - tweaks in lifestyle and natural therapies. Another thing that you must know is that Ayurveda is not only about medicines, it also focuses on your diet.

All about dosha

As per Ayurveda, dosha is one of the three substances present in the human body and a harmony between three doshas is important to stay healthy. There are three doshas- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The first step of Ayurvedic healing is determining your dosha. The doshas are 'health types' based on which a diet, exercise or medicine is prescribed to a person.

It is obvious that water is the basic necessity of life. Sufficient intake of water is necessary to stay healthy and fit. But if you are choosing some other drink, you need to do it as per your dosha.

Vata Dosha

Vata dosha is comprised of the ether (space) and air elements, which means it is drier than the other doshas. People belonging to this category have to drink more fluid than others. You can balance the amount of water required by your body by eating fruits, vegetables, and other beverages. People belonging to this category has a thin build, they are enthusiastic and imaginative.

What to drink: Herbal teas, milk, seed milk, fruits, and vegetable juice.

What to avoid: Cut down the intake of black tea, green tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, and caffeinated drinks.

Pitta Dosha

This dosha is linked to fire and controls the endocrine, metabolic, and digestive systems. Pitta dosha requires medium amount of water. Pitta is balanced by sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes that come from fruits and vegetables. People belonging to this category feel very cold, have a medium build and have acne-prone skin.

What to drink: Coconut water, green juices, sweet fruit juices like berry, mango, guava and hibiscus, lavender, rose, jasmine teas are best.

What to avoid: Kombucha, beer, wine, and other acidic drinks.

Kapha Dosha

Kapha is a water and earth element. This is why people belonging to this dosha require less water. A Kapha dominant person is generally calm, grounded, and forgiving.

What to drink: Warm, black or green tea, vegetable juice, fenugreek, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom tea. People can also have a moderate amount of caffeinated drinks.

What to avoid: Dairy products, seeds milk and sugary drinks.
