From saunf to ajwain: 5 natural additions to water for a healthy morning

A warm glass of water in the morning sets the tone for the day, and what you add to it can make a surprising difference. From easing acidity to supporting immunity, several everyday kitchen ingredients are traditionally used to “activate” warm water for better digestion, metabolism and detox. We reviewed research studies, Ayurveda-backed evidence and clinical data to break down five popular warm-water add-ins, what they actually do, and how to prepare them safely. Start small, observe how the body responds, and pick the one that suits your health needs best.

2/6

Saunf with warm water for acidity relief

Saunf (fennel) has been used for generations as a natural remedy for indigestion, acidity and bloating, and modern research offers some support for this traditional wisdom. Saunf contains anethole, a compound shown in studies to relax gastrointestinal smooth muscles. This can reduce cramping and ease the discomfort associated with acidity and reflux.

How to prepare saunf water:
Crush 1 teaspoon saun, then boil in 1 cup water for 3 to 5 minutes. Strain and sip warm in the morning.
Note: People with chronic stomach pain or ulcers should refrain from consuming saunf water.

3/6

Ajwain and jeera for gas relief and bloating

Both ajwain and jeera are long-used carminatives. Reviews and experimental studies report thymol-rich ajwain and cumin essential oils speed gastric emptying, reduce intestinal gas and ease indigestion in preclinical work.

How to use: Boil half teaspoon ajwain and half teaspoon jeera in 250 ml water for 5–7 minutes, strain, and drink warm for bloating relief

4/6

Shilajit water for metabolism

Shilajit, a mineral-rich resin from the Himalayas, has been used in Ayurveda for vitality and metabolic support. Modern research suggests it may improve mitochondrial energy production, thanks to fulvic acid and trace minerals. Studies indicate that Shilajit can enhance cellular ATP levels, support exercise metabolism, and reduce fatigue, all of which may indirectly improve metabolic efficiency.

How to prepare Shilajit water:
Dissolve a pea-sized (100–150 mg) purified Shilajit resin in warm water and drink in the morning.
Note: Only tested, heavy-metal–free Shilajit should be used.

5/6

Triphala water for detox

Triphala is widely used for digestion, gentle detoxification and metabolic balance. Modern research suggests that Triphala’s benefits come from its rich polyphenols, antioxidant activity and mild laxative effects. Studies show that Triphala may help improve bowel movements, support gut microbiome balance, reduce inflammation, and enhance the body’s natural detox pathways by improving digestion and elimination.
To prepare Triphala water, add half to 1 teaspoon of triphala powder to 1 cup of warm water, let it steep for 5-10 minutes. Sip on an empty stomach in the morning.
Note: People with diarrhoea, or those taking blood-sugar–lowering medications should avoid the consumption of Triphala water

6/6

Haldi and giloy with warm water for immunity

Haldi and giloy are two of Ayurveda’s most trusted immunity boosters, and modern research gives them credible support. Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Studies show curcumin may help modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation associated with infections.
To prepare: Add half teaspoon haldi and one teaspoon giloy stem pieces (or half tsp giloy powder). Boil in 1 cup of water for 5 to 7 minutes, and sip warm in the morning.
Note: People with blood thinners or antidiabetic medications should avoid consuming this mixture.
