Recovering from COVID at home

If you think you have a COVID infection, it is important to get tested to know for sure as well as isolate yourself so that you do not infect others. Currently, Omicron variant XBB 1.16 is rampant in India. Even though studies and experts suggest the new variant is not more severe than the previous ones, battling a COVID infection is nevertheless not easy. Consult your doctor for treatment. When isolated at home, you may be able to manage some of the mild symptoms to speed up your recovery process. Here are some tips to help you treat COVID-19 symptoms at home.

2/6

Treating a high temperature

If you have a high temperature, NHS UK recommends to get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you feel uncomfortable.

3/6

Treating a cough

If you have a cough and want to lie down, avoid lying on your back and instead lie on your side. Having a teaspoon of honey may help ease a cough. However, honey should not be given to babies under 12 months. Make sure to consult your doctor if your cough worsens or does not cure.

Things to try if you're feeling breathless

If you're feeling breathless, start breathing slowly in through your nose and out through your mouth, with your lips together like you're gently blowing out a candle, advised NHS UK. Sit upright in a chair, relax your shoulders so you're not hunched and leaning forward slightly. Support yourself by putting your hands on your knees or on something stable like a chair. In case of breathlessness, it is important to consult your doctor.

5/6

Rest

Adequate rest is important for recovery. Take a break from school or work and focus completely on healing. Let other members of the house take care of household responsibilities like cooking or going grocery shopping. Isolate yourself in your room to avoid infecting any other family member. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most people typically recover after 2–6 weeks.

Many people lose their appetite or do not have the energy to eat when sick. However, eating is important to provide your body with fuel and nourishment to boost your recovery. Opt for healthy, home cooked food that is not too spicy and easy to digest. Eat toast or soup.
