Some superfoods that you must avoid

Superfood is a term that has gained popularity in the world of health and fitness in the past decade. It is used for referring to foods that offer maximum nutritional benefits at minimal calories. There are several superfoods to choose from, but there are some that should not be excessively consumed; doing so can harm your health. Ayurvedic expert, Dr Rekha Radhamony, recently took to her Instagram handle and shared the list of three superfoods that must not be consumed in excess.

2/4

Pippali or long pepper

Pippali is an exotic herb, used widely for flavouring foods and preparing Ayurvedic medicines. Packed with a host of natural compounds like glycosides, eugenols, alkaloids, terpenoids and others, pippali offers extensive health benefits. Adding this superfood to the diet can enhance libido, manage blood sugar levels, reduce weight, reduce menstrual problems, promote digestion and prevent diarrohea. But excessive intake of this herb and for a long time in the form of kadha or powder can imbalance all the three doshas- Vata, Pitta, Kapha. It can cause indigestion, stomach pain, itching, redness, and swelling of the skin.

3/4

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV is the most popular superfood of the current time. People consume it for boosting immunity, losing weight, improving digestion and lowering blood cholesterol and sugar level. But going overboard on ACV can actually backfire and you may have to deal with its nasty side effects. The fermented drink is acidic and sour that affects all- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The diluted juice increases the production of digestive juices and makes you feel acidic. Consuming too much of it on a regular basis can cause skin burns and ulcers in the stomach.

4/4

Salt

Salt is a common favouring agent, used across the globe. In most countries, salt is fortified with Iodine, a trace mineral that helps to prevent goitre and prevent nutrient deficiency. But salt also contains sodium that may have a harmful effect on your health if consumed in excess. As per Ayurveda, excess salt intake may lead to vitiation of blood, excessive thirst, unconsciousness, burning sensation and skin disorder. For an average adult, it is recommended to take 5 grams of salt in a day, more than that is not good for health. Besides, do not add extra salt on top of your food on the dining table.
