Strokes are more common in women: Signs every woman should pay attention to

What is a stroke

A stroke is a sudden and often life-threatening medical problem characterized by the abrupt interruption or significant reduction of blood flow to a part of the brain. This interruption can occur due to the blockage of a blood vessel because of a clot or the rupture of a blood vessel, resulting in bleeding within the brain. This disruption leads to the deprivation of oxygen and nutrients to brain cells, causing rapid damage or cell death. Stroke symptoms may include sudden weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, severe headaches and vision problems.

Higher risk of stroke in women

Stroke is a significant global health concern and is more common in women than in men.
According to the CDC, “More than 2 in 5 women have blood pressure greater than or equal to 130/80 mm Hg or are taking medicine to control their blood pressure. Only about 1 in 4 of those women have their blood pressure controlled to below 130/80 mm Hg. Stroke risk increases with age. Because women generally live longer than men, more women have strokes over their lifetimes.” Reasons such as hypertension, pregnancies and birth control medications contribute to greater stroke risks in women.
Here we list 5 symptoms to look out for that contribute to stroke risks and death.

3/9

The FAST symptom

The ‘FAST’ acronym is commonly employed to remember the typical warning signs of a stroke. Facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty are the immediate symptoms and the urgent need to contact emergency services is the next step. These signs are pertinent to both men and women, but women encounter particular symptoms that differ from or accompany the FAST indicators.

4/9

Facial and limb weakness

Facial sagging or weakness is a traditional stroke symptom and can manifest in women in the same way as it does in men. One side of the face may appear to sag or become immobilized, causing an asymmetrical smile. Arm weakness is likewise a frequent stroke signal. Women may encounter problems lifting or controlling one or both arms. In specific instances, this weakness is more enduring in women.

5/9

Vision complications

Sudden alterations in vision, such as blurry or double vision, can also be a signal of a stroke in women. They may also encounter less common symptoms related to their vision, such as observing flashes of light or experiencing sudden blindness in one or both eyes. Seeing a specific blurry patch in one or both eyes may also indicate the condition in women.

6/9

Altered state of consciousness

Stroke can lead to confusion, disorientation or unconsciousness, which is more severe in women. Women might exhibit symptoms, such as sudden fatigue, general weakness or lethargy in doing daily tasks. Although these symptoms are not typically associated with stroke, they can be indicative of a cerebrovascular incident and in extreme scenarios, stroke.

7/9

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting can occur in both men and women during a stroke, but research indicates that women may be more prone to experiencing these symptoms. When nausea and vomiting accompany other stroke warning signs, such as sudden weakness, dizziness or altered consciousness, particularly in combination, it should raise concern for women. These symptoms can be indicative of a brain-related issue, as the brain's oxygen supply is disrupted during a stroke.

8/9

Hiccups and shortness of breath

Hiccups and shortness of breath are less frequently associated with strokes, but they've been reported by some women and backed by research as potential indicators of a stroke. While they can result from various benign causes like eating too quickly or anxiety, in certain cases, they might signal a neurological issue, particularly when they occur in isolation or alongside other stroke symptoms. For women, dismissing them could delay necessary medical intervention, increasing the risk of severe brain damage or long-term disability.

9/9

How to prevent a stroke

Prevention of stroke too has been recommended by CDC with another acronym. The ABCS, i.e., Aspirin, blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking.
Consuming aspirin in medically recommended quantities, controlling your blood pressure, keeping cholesterol in check and quitting or not smoking at all are active ways to keep the strokes at bay.
Further, lifestyle changes including a healthy diet rid of harmful fats and carbs and containing low amounts of sodium which can in turn help with lower blood pressure is recommended to reduce the risk of stroke. Further, an active workout routine can keep strokes and related symptoms away.

But, if any of the symptoms above are recurring and causing discomfort, it is wise to consult a medical professional as soon as possible to save yourself from a possible complication.
