World Obesity Day 2025: Theme, history and importance
What is World Obesity Day?
Since 2015, World Obesity Days have encouraged people to recognise the root causes of obesity, increase knowledge of the disease, tackle weight stigma, foreground the voices of people with lived experience and act to improve the world’s understanding, prevention and treatment of obesity.
Why is Obesity a growing concern?
Obesity rates have tripled since 1975, with childhood obesity increasing five times in the same period. Today, one in five children and more than one in three adults are overweight or obese. But what makes obesity such a serious issue?
Obesity is linked to several non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- High blood pressure and heart disease
- Stroke
- Certain types of cancer
- Fatty liver disease
- Joint problems and arthritis
Beyond physical health, obesity also affects mental well-being. Many people struggling with obesity face body shaming, low self-esteem, and depression, making it harder to seek help. That’s why raising awareness and providing support is crucial.
The root causes of obesity
Contrary to common belief, obesity is not just about eating too much or not exercising enough. It is a complex condition influenced by multiple factors, such as:
- Dietary habits – High consumption of processed foods, sugary drinks, and unhealthy fats.
- Lifestyle choices – Lack of physical activity due to sedentary jobs and increased screen time.
- Genetics – Some people have a higher genetic tendency to store fat.
- Psychological factors – Emotional stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to overeating.
- Economic and environmental influences – Limited access to affordable, healthy food and safe spaces for exercise.
How can we address the obesity crisis?
Tackling obesity requires a collective effort from individuals, communities, and governments. Here are some ways we can help prevent and manage obesity:
- Promoting healthy eating habits – Encouraging whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and portion control.
- Making exercise a part of daily life – Walking, cycling, and engaging in physical activities.
- Restricting the marketing of unhealthy foods to children – Regulating advertisements for sugary and processed foods.
- Implementing taxes on sugary beverages – Reducing the consumption of sugar-laden drinks.
- Providing access to healthcare and support – Making obesity treatment and counseling more accessible.
Importance of World Obesity Day
World Obesity Day is not just about spreading awareness—it’s about taking action. By addressing obesity with compassion and scientific understanding, society can help those struggling with weight issues. Encouraging healthier choices, promoting better policies, and creating supportive environments can lead to a healthier future for everyone.
