Understanding dementia and Alzheimer’s

Dementia is a general term for a group of symptoms linked to the ongoing decline of the brain – these include a gradual decline in memory, thinking, behavior and social skills. While certain cognitive changes naturally occur as we get older, others can be a sign of something more serious and require proper treatment. If left untreated, the patient’s quality of life can suffer, among other things.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and the symptoms of this condition can affect a person's ability to function. Alzheimer's disease causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to eventually die.

Impact of dementia on life

According to health experts, dementia may not cause much issues in its early stages. However, if ignored, the condition can worsen leading to symptoms troubling on a daily basis. It can also be challenging for the patient’s near and dear ones to take care of them if the condition worsened. Spotting the tell-tale signs early and seeking help from a doctor can help in timely treatment to manage the condition.

3/6

Recognizing early warning signs

The initial signs of dementia can vary from person to person. According to health experts, four early symptoms to be wary of include – mild forgetfulness, difficulty finding the right words, trouble with planning and organization, and getting lost in familiar places. As the condition worsens, more noticeable symptoms may emerge.

Symptoms worsen as disease progresses

After the initial stage, if dementia worsens, it can cause troublesome symptoms like severe memory loss, confusion about time and place, difficulty in completing familiar tasks, poor judgment, withdrawal from social activities, and shifts in the patient’s mood and personality.

Lesser known symptoms

According to health experts, some lesser-known signs of dementia include difficulty recognizing faces, trouble with spatial relationships which can cause them to trip over objects, reduced ability to understand and follow complex instructions, as well as changes in hygiene habits. While lesser known, these too can be signs associated with dementia.

What should you do if you suspect a loved one has dementia?

Handling a loved one with dementia can be difficult, so it is important to be patient and approach them with empathy. Talk to them kindly and comfort them as they might themselves be confused or afraid as to what is happening to them. Instead of confrontations or accusations, support them and provide reassurance. Do not hesitate in seeking medical help for your loved one, such as your parent or grandparent, if you suspect they have symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer's.
