Why the new Hantavirus should not be a reason for panic
Amid the current fear and panic being caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic, reports have emerged from China that a man died of the Hantavirus, a disease known to spread through rodents. Given the sombre state of affairs with entire countries under lockdown, the news of a new virus does come as a shock for everyone. The Hantavirus does belong to a serious and deadly strain of viruses, however, the report of one death in China should not have us fearing another pandemic. The coronavirus demands our immediate attention. Here are a few reasons why the Hantavirus should not be a cause of added panic during these trying times.
It is not contagious
The Hantavirus originated from rodents and can only be contracted through contact to rat urine, faeces or saliva. It has been known not to be as contagious as the novel coronavirus. There is no other known way for the virus to spread. However, it is equally important to maintain hygiene like during the current pandemic and take extra care if you live in an area that is infested with rodents.
Rare human-to-human spread
Unlike the coronavirus, human to human spread in this new virus is rare. You are very less likely to contract the virus through another human being. In China, other people who were travelling by the bus in which the man died are also being tested.
Not a new virus
The hantavirus is actually not a new virus, contrary to the COVID-19 virus. It has been around for the last few decades and enough research has already be done on the virus. Medical researchers around the globe know what they are dealing with in the case of hantavirus, which was not the case when the coronavirus pandemic started. They are adept at handling cases and already know the pattern of the disease, if required.
Doctors know treatment procedures
Research has already been done on the hantavirus since its discovery and has given doctors way to control the disease. Even though the virus has been known to be deadly and cause severe respiratory distress, patients are intubated and given oxygen treatment to ease symptoms.
Preliminary symptoms caused by the hantavirus are fatigue, fever, muscle aches, dizziness and chills, much like any other viral infections. The Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome may also lead to shortness of breath and severe respiratory distress.
