Both medical techniques are used to detect abnormality in breasts

Of the several medical tests and methods that are used to detect and diagnose a disease in the breasts, the most common ones are ultrasound and mammography. These are the screening tests that are used to find a disease in individuals who otherwise do not show any symptoms or show subtle signs of the disease. However, many patients do not know the basic differences between the two tests. In this article, we will help you understand what each of the tests do and will give some basic information about the tests.

Who should get these tests done?

Before learning about the tests, it is important to know who is eligible for these tests. Health agencies worldwide urge women to undergo screening tests for breasts ideally from the age of 40 and if diseases like breast cancer are running in the family, one should start testing from the 30s.

What is mammography?

Mammography is basically the X-ray of the breast. This is usually recommended for women who have symptoms like a lump, pain, breast skin thickening, indentation, sore nipple, and nipple discharge. The test method is used to detect breast cancers, tumors even if it is benign, and even cysts. There are different types of mammograms like screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms.

How is a mammogram done?

In this, invisible electromagnetic energy beams are used to create images of the internal tissues of the breasts. These days digital mammography is used to detect abnormality in the breasts. As per the information available on the website of John Hopkins, digital mammography is done in the same way as a standard mammogram and it provides electronic images of the breasts that are enhanced by computer technology, stored on computers, and even transmitted electronically in situations where remote access to the mammogram is required. The images are then analyzed by a radiologist.

Few things to take note of

Here are a few important things one needs to take note of before going for any of these tests

Do not wear skin products on the day of the test. Avoid applying creams or doing anything that makes your skin sensitive.

Wear loose clothes to the hospital so that you can easily remove your clothing and wear a gown and get ready for a test.

Do not eat or drink anything immediately before the test.

Ask your doctor if there are any other precautions you need to take during the test.

How is a breast ultrasound done?

In a breast ultrasound, the technologist applies a warm gel on the skin of the breasts that has to be examined. A transducer is then pressed against the skin of the breast and moved in order to study the tissues properly. Often patients are asked to remove jewellery and clothing for a good examination.

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging test in which sound waves are used to check the inside of the breasts for any abnormality. "This test is often used when a change has been seen on a mammogram or when a change is felt, but does not show up on a mammogram," a report available on the website of John Hopkins says. It is recommended when a mammogram is unable to see through the dense tissues of the breast.
