What happens if you accidentally swallow a chewing gum?
Imagine playing it cool in front of your crush, chatting non-stop with your friends while chewing gum, ignoring the crush purposefully (that’s the norm, duh!), and there he comes to say hi! Bam, and you swallowed the gum!
No matter how embarrassing it sounds, we’ve all been there!
Before panic sets in and you start imagining a sticky guest staying in your tummy forever, let’s hit pause. And read up about what *actually* happens when you swallow a gum.
What *really* happens when you swallow chewing gum?
No, it doesn't stick around for years
You’ve probably heard that gum stays in your stomach for seven years. Turns out, that’s just an urban legend. The idea that gum hangs out in your belly for seven years is entirely false. Your digestive system treats gum like most indigestible foods; it moves it along and it exits your body within days, not years. Most gum is expelled in a bowel movement within a few days, usually around 24 to 48 hours. Most people are in the clear if a piece or two is swallowed by accident.
Err… But why and how?
Chewing gum is made of sweeteners, flavors, softeners, and, most importantly, a resilient gum base that your body can’t digest. But don’t worry; your intestines have strong “housekeeping waves” (a.k.a. peristalsis) that guide it right through to the exit, usually in less than a week
What really happens: The gum’s journey through the gut
Here’s the journey your gum undergoes:
It slides down your esophagus and lands in your stomach.
Your body absorbs any digestible ingredients, like sweeteners or flavorings, while the rubbery base remains intact.
The undigested gum moves through your small intestine and colon.
Finally, it exits within a few days, along with other waste.
Most gums are safe (till they aren’t)
If you swallow gum now and then, there's usually zero cause for concern. It’s unlikely to cause issues, and certainly won't cling around like a stowaway.
However, exception exists.
Rare roadblocks:
Accidental gum swallowing is usually harmless, but trouble can occur in rare cases. There are instances, mostly seen in young children, where swallowing lots of gum (or gum plus foreign objects like coins) can form a bezoar, a sticky mass that leads to intestinal blockage. This is more common in kids who don’t understand chewing etiquette. If someone already has digestive issues, like constipation or gastroparesis (slowed stomach emptying), swallowed gum may increase the risk of problems.
Symptoms to watch for:
Persistent belly pain or swelling
Constipation or inability to pass stool
Nausea or vomiting
If you notice these, especially after chewing a lot of gum, it’s smart to call a doctor (maybe don't make gulping gum a dumb habit)!
Beyond the gulp!
Recent research adds a surprising twist: scientists at UCLA discovered that chewing gum, whether synthetic or natural, can release hundreds to thousands of microplastic particles into your saliva. These tiny bits may be swallowed along with the gum. While human harm hasn't been proven, microplastics are under investigation for links to cellular damage, inflammation, and chronic disease. However, scientists say the occasional piece of gum isn’t a cause for alarm, and more research is needed.
Furthermore, sugar-free gum often contains sorbitol and other sugar alcohols. These can act like a laxative when eaten in high amounts, causing bloating, cramps, or diarrhea. While one stick probably won’t do much, chewing a lot, even if swallowed, can lead to some stomach grumbles.
The best rule of chewing gum, then?
Once you're done chewing, toss your gum in the trash, not in your stomach. It feels less dramatic but is ultimately kinder to your body and your hopes of a sticky myth!
