Vitamin D deficiency symptoms: 9 signs you are low on the sunshine vitamin

In our modern, indoor-oriented and sedentary lives, the term “sunshine vitamin” might feel outdated, but the significance of the same has never been greater. Like the sunshine itself, the “sunshine vitamin,” aka vitamin D, is crucial for our overall health. The vitamin, which is called the “sunshine vitamin,” because sunlight helps your skin make it, plays a key role in helping your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, keeping bones strong, supporting muscle function, helping your immune system, and even mood regulation.

7 heart-healthy low-impact exercises you can do anytime, anywhere

Apart from sunlight, this particular vitamin is also found in certain foods and supplements. However, despite its importance, deficiency of vitamin D remains startlingly common worldwide. In fact, according to health sources, roughly one billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency, and about half the population is considered insufficient.

When levels of vitamin D drop too low, the effects are often subtle at first – a slow sense of fatigue, a niggling ache, a mood that dips. What’s tricky is that as the symptoms of low vitamin D are often subtle, slow to appear, they can be easily misattributed to stress, aging, or “just a busy lifestyle.” However, recognizing the early warning signs is vital – because by the time overt bone disease or muscle weakness surfaces, the underlying deficiency may have been at work for months.

2/10

Persistent fatigue or tiredness

Think you’re always left feeling drained, even though you hadn’t much on your itinerary? If you’re sleeping enough yet still dragging through the day, low vitamin D may be a contributor. This vitamin helps cells produce energy, hence low levels of the same may reduce vitality. Make a note to ask yourself: Are you tired even after restful sleep? That’s one reason to check.

3/10

Muscle weakness, aches, or cramps

It might not always be the consequences of a hectic workout day. Lack of vitamin D often leaves muscles near the hips and thighs greatly affected. You might struggle to climb stairs or feel unexplained pain or cramping in the legs. Because vitamin D aids muscle-cell function, when it’s insufficient, your body feels the difference.

4/10

Bone pain or back pain

Encountering joint pain frequently? Low vitamin D reduces mineralization of bones, leading to bone pain, especially in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or feet. If you’re getting recurring bone aches without an obvious cause, this could be a red flag to pay attention to.

5/10

Frequent falls or fractures, or reduced bone strength

In adults, serious vitamin D deficiency may lead to osteomalacia (soft-bones) or contribute to osteoporosis (brittle-bones). If you’ve had a fracture from a minor bump, check your vitamin D, among other causes.

6/10

Decline in mood and depression

Vitamin D has effects beyond bones. One of the most significant impacts this particular vitamin has is that it helps modulate mood. There’s increasing evidence that this vitamin affects brain chemistry – it links to seasonal affective disorder, depressed mood, and low serotonin have been seen. If you’re feeling down, especially in less-sunny months, vitamin D is one piece of the puzzle.

7/10

Frequent illness or infections

The immune system is one of the systems that vitamin D supports. When your levels are low, you're more likely to catch colds, flu, or respiratory infections. Healing may also be slower when you're ill. If cuts, sores, or surgical incisions are slow to heal, vitamin D deficiency could be part of the issue. Because vitamin D supports immune defense, low levels may make you more prone to colds, flu, or other infections.

8/10

Hair loss or poor wound healing

Hair loss is another sign that many don’t connect with vitamin D. The vitamin helps with hair follicle health; very low levels may contribute to hair thinning or loss. Additionally, if your skin is behaving badly – with dryness, slow wound healing, or more frequent infections – it’s time to look beyond external products. These signs often get treated topically, but vitamin D levels may be part of the reason.

9/10

Sleep problems or poor sleep quality

Ensuring adequate vitamin D levels can support deeper, more restorative sleep, helping regulate circadian rhythms and improving overall mood and focus during the day. Sun exposure, fortified foods, and supplements (if needed) can help maintain optimal levels. Pairing this with a consistent sleep schedule and a calm nighttime routine enhances sleep quality even further.

10/10

Pale or dull skin, slow healing

Low vitamin D may limit skin-cell renewal and repair. Some dermatology sources link deficiency with dryness, delayed wound healing, acne, dull complexion, and even brittle nails. All of these can be a subtle sign – but one worth noticing.
