Vitamin D deficiency: 5 ways low levels can impact body and health

Vitamin D, often called the “sunshine vitamin,” is essential for maintaining overall health. It is unique among vitamins because the body can produce it when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Additionally, it can be obtained through certain foods like fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and supplements. Despite its abundance present in sunlight, a survey report from PubMed central suggests that Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in India, affecting around 70% to almost everyone in the general population. Low levels of this crucial nutrient can have far-reaching consequences for the body, from weakening bones to impacting mental health. Here are five key ways vitamin D deficiency can affect health and overall wellness.

2/9

Weakens bones and muscles

One of the most well-known consequences of vitamin D deficiency is its effect on bone health. Vitamin D is vital for calcium absorption, which is necessary for maintaining strong bones. In children, a severe deficiency can lead to rickets, a condition characterized by soft and weak bones. A study published in PubMed Central highlights that vitamin D deficiency can result in secondary hyperparathyroidism and bone loss, leading to osteoporosis and fractures.

3/9

Impairs immune function

Vitamin D is crucial for the proper functioning of the immune system. Deficiency can compromise immune responses, making the body more susceptible to infections.
Systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet found that vitamin D supplementation could reduce the risk of acute respiratory infections, particularly in individuals who are deficient.

4/9

Affects mood and mental health

Vitamin D receptors are present in various brain regions, influencing mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Deficiency has been linked to mood disorders, including depression and anxiety. According to an NIH study review, individuals with low vitamin D levels were more likely to experience depressive symptoms.

5/9

Increases risk of chronic diseases

A study published in the American heart association found that low vitamin D levels were linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Adequate vitamin D levels are essential for reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Deficiency has been associated with an increased risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.
Additionally, as per NIH, vitamin D deficiency has been shown to activate pro-inflammatory cytokines, which may contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

6/9

Impacts skin and hair health

An NIH study review discussed the complex relationship between vitamin D and skin health, noting that deficiency could exacerbate certain skin disorders. Vitamin D plays a role in skin cell growth and repair. Deficiency can lead to various skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.
Also, regarding hair health, vitamin D receptors are present in hair follicles, and deficiency has been linked to hair loss conditions like alopecia areata.

7/9

Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides guidelines on vitamin D status; levels between 20–50 ng/mL are considered adequate for bone and overall health in most individuals. It's important to note that individual requirements can vary based on factors such as age, skin color, geographic location, and existing health conditions. For instance, older adults, individuals with darker skin, and those with limited sun exposure may require higher intakes to achieve optimal levels.

8/9

Avoid too much consumption

Remember, too much Vitamin D too, is harmful for health, so exercise caution

9/9

Ways to improve vitamin D levels

Sun exposure: Sunlight is a natural source of vitamin D

Dietary sources: Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines, milk, orange juice and egg yolks.
For individuals at the risk of deficiency, supplements are available, which can be taken after consultation with an expert.
