Urinary Incontinence: 5 signs that indicate a weak pelvic floor

Do you often leak urine due to coughing or sneezing?

The inadvertent flow of urine as a result of physical stress, such as coughing, laughing, or exercising, is known as urinary incontinence. It can be a difficult and unpleasant condition, but with the appropriate approach, it is treatable and controllable. The causes of SUI and the available treatments will be discussed in this article.

Weakness in the pelvic floor is the key factor in UI. The muscles in the pelvic floor support the bladder and regulate urine. These muscles may deteriorate gradually, resulting in SUI. The deterioration of the pelvic floor muscles and the risk of UI can also be attributed to menopause, ageing, pregnancy and childbirth, obesity, and menopause. UI can happen to anyone, while women are more prone than males to encounter it.

Common signs that can indicate a pelvic floor problem include:

2/6

Accidentally leaking urine while laughing, coughing or sneezing

When you cough, laugh, sneeze, run, or do heavy lifting, the strain (stress) on your bladder causes you to leak urine. This condition is known as stress incontinence. There is no connection between stress incontinence and emotional stress.

3/6

Not making it to the toilet in time

There may be occasions when the detrusor muscles tighten excessively, making it urgent to use the loo. This condition is referred to as an overactive bladder. Your detrusor muscles may contract excessively due to a weak pelvic floor.

4/6

Constantly needing to go to the toilet

Conditions that increase urine production may be brought on by weak pelvic muscles. A weak pelvic floor can cause changes in the muscles, nerves, or other tissues that influence bladder function.

5/6

Finding it difficult to empty the bladder

You cannot completely empty your bladder when you have urinary retention. Chronic urinary retention prevents the bladder from emptying entirely over time which causes an abrupt inability to urinate.

6/6

Accidentally losing control of the bladder

A common and frequently humiliating issue, incontinence can result in loss of control over how the bladder works. Urinating without intention or accidentally leaking urine is also a sign of weak pelvic floor.
