Tragic loss of a 23-year-old: Lesson in food allergy awareness
The unexpected death of 23-year-old Alison Pickering who was a college student from Texas, brought attention to the dangers of food allergies. Despite being tragic, her story serves as a reminder to people and businesses to prioritise food safety and allergy awareness.
Alison, who was well-known for her rigid adherence to her peanut allergy, chose a restaurant she had previously visited on a date. She confidently ordered her normal meal, Mahi-Mahi, unaware that the recipe had been modified to add peanut sauce.
Her parents revealed that the change wasn’t disclosed on the menu, and even the restaurant staff seemed unaware of it, as reported by the CBS News. A few bites into her meal, Alison understood the onset of an allergic reaction. Despite administering her EpiPen and receiving immediate medical attention, she suffered severe anaphylactic shock and tragically passed away.
When the immune system overreacts and sees a harmless dietary protein as a danger, food allergies result. Peanuts are one of the most common allergens, and even small amounts can trigger severe symptoms in sensitive people.
The most severe allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, can worsen quickly and result in:
Anaphylaxis can be lethal if treatment is delayed, such as administering epinephrine (using an EpiPen). According to a study published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1 in 50 Americans is at risk of anaphylaxis during their lifetime.
Alison’s case highlights the importance of transparency in food service. Her parents have since advocated for food allergen safety legislation, including the Sergio Lopez Food Allergy Awareness Act in Texas. This act seeks to mandate allergen training for restaurant staff and better communication about ingredient changes.
