This common supplement might be the reason why the younger generation is at risk of early heart attacks
But something doesn’t add up.
Despite the ripped bodies and disciplined diets, hospitals are witnessing a growing number of young adults, some as young as 30, arriving with signs of heart trouble. And in many such cases, there’s no smoking, no junk food addiction, and no family history to blame. So, what’s going on?
Why appearance isn't everything
There’s a saying in medicine: “What looks fine on the surface might be crumbling underneath.” Cardiologist Dr Dmitry Yaranov recently shared a sobering reminder of this truth on his Instagram. He described cases of young, muscular men, athletes by all outward appearances, who suffered sudden heart attacks.
He explains that while these individuals had impressive physiques, their blood vessels were silently inflamed, stiffened, and narrowed, all classic signs of cardiovascular stress. A closer look revealed a common link: years of consuming excessive protein, particularly from animal sources and powders.
What high-protein diets might be hiding
Protein is crucial for muscle repair, immune function, and metabolism. But the recent obsession with more is better might be creating an imbalance that the heart simply can’t ignore.
Dr Dmitry outlines some worrying effects of long-term high-protein diets:
- Raised LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol)
- Endothelial dysfunction – when blood vessels lose their ability to relax and regulate flow
- Chronic low-grade inflammation
- Premature atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in arteries)
It's not just the quantity of protein, but the source that matters. Many popular protein supplements are derived from whey (a dairy product) or casein, both of which may raise cholesterol in certain individuals. Add to that a diet rich in red meat, eggs, and dairy, and the result could be more harmful than helpful, especially when plant foods are missing.
Misleading metrics: The problem with modern health trends
The health industry often glorifies muscle size, low body fat, and visible veins. But internal health, the kind that protects against sudden heart attacks, doesn’t show up in selfies.
Key warning signs often go unnoticed:
- Blood pressure might remain normal.
- Cholesterol numbers might not raise red flags at first.
- No breathlessness, no chest pain, until it’s too late.
What many young adults miss is the role of endothelial cells, the inner lining of blood vessels. When damaged by constant dietary stress and inflammation, they become a breeding ground for plaques. And that’s where silent heart disease begins.
