Things to keep in mind during sex if you don't wish to get pregnant

How to prevent unwanted pregnancy:

One of the most common concerns among partners is how to prevent unintended pregnancy. While there are several effective methods of contraception, it's important to keep in mind that no method is 100% safe. If you're sexually active and don't wish to become pregnant, here are some things to keep in mind during sex:

2/6

Use contraceptive methods:

Dr. Poonguzhali Liston, MS OB/GYN with, Advanced Diploma in ART and RM, Medical Expert at Kindly Health, says, “The most effective way to prevent pregnancy is by using contraception. There are many different methods available, including hormonal methods like the pill, patch, or ring, barrier methods like condoms or diaphragms, and long-acting reversible methods like the intrauterine device (IUD) or implant. It's imperative to connect with your healthcare provider and get knowledge on which
method is suitable for you.”

3/6

Use condoms:

Condoms not only prevent pregnancy but also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It's important to use condoms every time you have sex, even if you're using another method of contraception.

4/6

Be aware of your fertile window:

According to Dr. Liston, “If you're using a natural family planning method or tracking your menstrual cycle to prevent pregnancy, it's important to know when you're most fertile. This is typically the time around ovulation when an egg is released from the ovary and can be fertilized by sperm. You can track your cycle using a calendar or a fertility tracking app.”

5/6

Use emergency contraception:

If you've had unprotected sex or your contraception has failed, it's important to know about emergency contraception. This includes the morning-after pill which can be taken up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. Emergency contraception is to be used sparingly and not as a substitute for contraception (pills, condoms, etc.), as multiple uses can lead to side effects.

6/6

Consider sterilization:

If you're sure you don't want to have children in the future, sterilization may be an option. This includes procedures like tubal ligation or vasectomy, which permanently prevent pregnancy.

It's important to remember that no method of contraception is 100% effective, and there is always a risk of unintended pregnancy. If you have concerns about your contraception or think you may be pregnant, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider.
