Facts about eye care

Out of the 5 senses of the human body - touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste - our eyesight is the most important for us. The ability to see is the most precious attribute gifted to mankind, and those who are deprived of it have to combat serious circumstances in their daily lives. However, there are a number of myths that come along with taking care of one’s eyes, eye protection and eye damage. Here are some facts which can put an end to the mistaken beliefs surrounding eye care.

2/6

Eye exercises can’t enhance your visionary powers

Eye exercises won’t aid in improving your vision, eye health or putting a hold on your needs of wearing glasses. Your vision is dependent on factors such as shape of your eyeballs and your eye tissue health. Eye exercises won’t help in altering any of these.

People have been glorifying eye exercises since ancient times as a cure for eyesight related problems, however there is no scientific evidence available to prove this factor. Although practicing eye exercises might help in reducing eye strain.

3/6

Lighting adjustment is necessary

Reading in dim light will not affect your eyesight in any way, however, it will wear your eyes rapidly. Therefore, it is advised to place your reading lamp in such a way that its light directly falls on the text and not on your shoulder. Having a desk lamp of an opaque shade is perfect while reading.

4/6

Role of carrots in eye care

Carrots are satisfactory for improving eye health as they are rich in Vitamin A, but fresh fruits and green veggies which contain antioxidant vitamins like vitamin C and E are far better for improving eyesight. The antioxidant properties might help in protecting the eyes from cataract infection and age associated macular degeneration. However, even leafy vegetables and fruits won’t be of any help in rectifying issues like nearsightedness and farsightedness.

5/6

Don’t forget to wear spectacles

If it is medically advised for you to wear glasses or contact lenses, always wear them. Not wearing them will lead to causing strain to your eyes. However, not wearing your spectacles won’t lead to any adverse consequences like aggravating your vision or causing an eye disease.

How to tackle technology to improve eye health

Computer usage won’t hamper your eye health however, gazing at the computer screen for long periods can majorly impact your eyesight. Those people who keep looking at the computer screen for a very, very long time, usually forget to blink which leads to lack of lubrication. To cure this problem, try changing the adjustment of the lighting so that a strong glare or reflection is not created on the device’s screen. Rest your eyes for a short period of 20 minutes and try to blink your eyes often so that they stay well- lubricated.
