The role of obesity in bone fractures: A growing concern for Indian seniors
How does obesity impact bone strength?
Bones are living tissues that constantly reform. Excess body weight causes uneven stress on joints and bones, especially in bearing areas such as the hips, knees, and ankles. After a long while, the resulting stress reduces the quality of bone, and fractures can occur more often. Low bone density usually comes with obesity. Obesity is associated with weak muscle strength and coordination, which makes older adults more susceptible to falls, a major reason for fractures.Obesity related conditions that affect bone health
Obesity has been linked to numerous health issues, such as bone fragility and higher fracture risk. Due to high blood sugar levels, type 2 diabetes causes bone mineralization to be impaired, and bones become more fragile. Obese people are more likely to experience a deficiency in vitamin D because of the extra fat that prevents absorption, resulting in insufficient calcium and weak bones. Osteoarthritis is another major problem, which occurs when excess weight puts pressure on joints and causes them to wear down. This leads to pain, stiffness, and the risk of falls, which elevates the number of fractures among obese individuals.Challenges in fracture healing and surgical risks in obese individuals
Obesity leads to significant problems in fracture healing and increases operational risks. Diabetic and circulatory problems in obese patients delay bone regeneration and increase infection risk. Rehabilitation after a fracture becomes complicated with limited mobility and the additional weight put on healing bones. Surgical complications in elderly obese patients increase with risks of anesthesia, longer operative times, and challenges with fixation devices. Delayed healing after surgery heightens the risk of pressure sores, infection, and blood clots. All these make the management of fractures in obese patients more complex, needing specific care and preventive measures to optimize the healing process and reduce complications. Interventions at an early stage in conjunction with appropriate weight control can optimize recovery and overall musculoskeletal function.Preventing fractures in obese seniors
Fracture management in the obese elderly is a combination of lifestyle modification and a balanced diet. Weight control is important since maintaining a healthy weight reduces bone and joint stress. A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D will help in bone development; dairy foods, almonds, and sun exposure are great sources. Strength and balance exercises can help prevent falling. Physical exercises like yoga, walking, and weight training improve physical strength and coordination, and the elderly become more stable and less prone to falling.Dr. Dheeraj Bhateja, Consultant, Orthospine & Orthopedics, Artemis Hospital Gurgaon
