The most dangerous food for liver, according to a US doc
Fatty liver disease on the rise
Fatty liver disease is one of the most common liver disease. The non-alcoholid fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is on the rise, with more young people being diagnose. In the United States an estimated 100 million people (about 25%) have NAFLD, according to the American Liver Foundation. This disease, unrelated to heavy alcohol use, is characterized by excess fat buildup in the liver. And the key contributor is unhealthy diet.
The most dangerous food for liver
If you think unhealthy food is all about the fries or burgers, you are mistaken. “If you think meat or saturated fats like ghee or butter are the worst for your liver, think again. These are actually fine,” Dr. Sznajder says.
The doctor reveals that the worst food for liver is high fructose corn syrup. “Research shows that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is far worse and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Unlike glucose, fructose is more readily converted into fat in the liver, increasing the risk of liver damage,” he said, in a video shared on Instagram.

"HFCS is commonly found in processed foods like cookies, candies, cereals, soft drinks, and sauces. Avoiding these can help protect your liver health,” he stated.
What is fructose?
Fructose is a type of sugar commonly used in sugary beverages, processed snacks, and flavoured yogurts. Though fructose is naturally found in fruits and vegetables, the industrial fructose (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) is harmful to the liver. Surprisingly, industrial fructose used in all kinds of beverages and processed foods. It is a driving force in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
When you consume industrial fructose, it is processed in the intestines first, where it can affect the gut lining and the balance of gut bacteria. This leads to increased absorption of nutrients and fat-building substances that flow into the liver. High levels of fructose and its byproducts from gut bacteria (like acetate and butyrate) elevate the fat production in the liver, leading to fat buildup and liver damage. Excessive fructose intake leads to inflammation. Over time, this inflammation can contribute to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Reducing fructose consumption is crucial for maintaining liver health and overall metabolic balance.
