Tech neck and text thumb: The quiet digital-age wounds Gen Z needs to know about

Why Gen Z and young working professionals are most vulnerable

With the smartphone and laptop era, new musculoskeletal conditions are making their way to clinics, "tech neck" and "text thumb." They are repetitive strain injuries contracted due to poor posture and excessive use of digital devices, informs Dr. Akshay TM, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Apollo One.
Leaning forward to look at a screen compels your neck muscles to tighten in order to hold up the weight of your head in an abnormal position. This is generally held for a few hours, so Gen Z and young working professionals are most at risk.

Early warning signs

The most frequent red flags are pain and stiffness of the thumb and the neck. In severe cases, tingling or numbness can be induced by tech neck, and text thumb can lead to swelling as well as loss of grip strength.

3/6

Chronic complications if neglected

If not treated, tech neck will cause chronic muscle stiffness and fatigue, and even long-term spine problems. Likewise, repetitive strain on the thumb can cause tendon and joint inflammation, leading to ongoing pain.

4/6

Aside from the neck and thumb

Excessive smartphone and laptop use doesn’t just affect posture. We’re also seeing headaches, eye strain, nerve pain, and tingling in the arms linked to these conditions.

5/6

When to seek medical help

Persistent pain and stiffness are key signals, but neurological symptoms like numbness or tingling are red flags that warrant a visit to a doctor or physiotherapist.

6/6

Prevention and life remedies

The silver lining: with slight adjustments, the overwhelming majority can be avoided.
Taking regular breaks for your thumb
Applying anti-inflammatory treatment like ice or a brace as needed
Doing easy exercises for strengthening and stretching
Having an ergonomic screen arrangement to prevent strain
Digital devices are not going anywhere. But with mindful lifestyle changes, we can avoid tech neck and text thumb from becoming chronic conditions.
