Study advises against Western diet during pregnancy, says it has autism and ADHD risk to infants
"Despite the high prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders, the influence of maternal diet during pregnancy on child neurodevelopment remains understudied. Here we show that a western dietary pattern during pregnancy is associated with child neurodevelopmental disorders," say a group of researchers who recently studied the impact of Western diet and how it increases the risk of autism and ADHD in infants.
Slight deviations towards a more Western diet were linked to a 66% increased risk of ADHD and a 122% increased risk of autism, the researchers have found after analysing over 60,000 mother child pairs from the University of Copenhagen and the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC) at the Danish Paediatric Asthma Centre, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital.
According to senior author Professor Morten Arendt Rasmussen from the University of Copenhagen, when comparing across cohorts, we observed the strongest associations in the first and second trimesters, suggesting that brain development during this period is particularly sensitive to maternal nutritional influences.
What is Western diet?
The Western diet, often referred to as the Standard American Diet (SAD), is characterized by high consumption of processed foods, red meat, refined grains, sugary beverages, and unhealthy fats. This diet is convenient and widely accessible but is linked to numerous health issues, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. The excessive intake of ultra-processed foods, laden with artificial additives and preservatives, significantly impacts overall health. One of the key concerns of the Western diet is its high sugar and refined carbohydrate content, which leads to insulin resistance and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. Saturated and trans fats from fried and fast foods contribute to inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. The low intake of fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, further exacerbates digestive problems and increases the likelihood of chronic conditions.
In contrast to traditional diets that emphasize fresh and natural ingredients, the Western diet often lacks essential micronutrients and antioxidants, leading to deficiencies and weakened immunity. Experts recommend shifting towards a balanced diet rich in whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and fiber to counteract the negative effects of the Western diet and promote long-term well-being.
