Warning signs of kidney problems

Every organ in our body has a significant role to play. Just like our heart, brain and lungs, our kidneys work towards maintaining our overall health and wellness. The primary role of the kidneys is to cleanse the blood of toxins and transform the waste into urine, explains the UK National Health Services (NHS).

Apart from that, it regulates our blood pressure, makes red blood cells and also controls pH levels in the body. The kidneys take on several important responsibilities, which is why any irregularities with the organ can cause various complications. Here are some warning signals in the body to note.

Swelling in your face and feet, puffiness around your eyes

The main function of the kidneys is to flush out the toxins and wastes. However, when the organ stops functioning effectively, it can hamper the process, resulting in the buildup of toxins and impurities, along with the accumulation of excess water and salt in the body tissues. This can result in swelling in the face, feet and puffiness around the eyes.

Extreme fatigue

Kidneys also create red blood cells, lack of which can cause anemia. It can disrupt the supply of oxygen and nutrients in the body to the brain and the muscles, which can cause you to feel extremely tired and fatigued.

4/10

Changes in urination

Unhealthy kidneys can alter certain patterns or bring about changes in urination. Usually, the kidneys help filter blood to produce urine, through which wastes from the body are released. However, when the kidneys do not function properly, it can cause irregularities in the urinary tract. Some people may experience frequent urination, while others may notice blood in their urine. A foamy and bubble-filled urine can also indicate kidney trouble.

5/10

Breathlessness

Our kidneys are responsible for balancing the fluid in our body. Kidney problems can lead to the buildup of fluid in your lungs, which can cause shortness of breath. This is also called fluid overload or hypervolemia. Some people also experience chest pain, which can be confused with other health conditions.

Breathlessness is also associated with several health complications like those related to cardiovascular risks. Though people assume that breathlessness can be dealt without medical intervention, one should not ignore frequent occurrences.

6/10

Dry and Itchy skin

Having itchy, dry skin can be a sign of kidney disease. It is indicative of an imbalance of minerals and nutrients in the blood. It could also be due to a sudden rise in the blood levels of phosphorus.

7/10

How to improve your kidney health

In order to keep your kidneys healthy, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDKD) recommends making healthier food choices, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough sleep, quitting sleep, limiting alcohol intake, managing diabetes and high blood pressure and reducing stress.

8/10

Who is at risk of kidney problems?

According to Kidney Research UK, people with diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and a family history of kidney damage are prone to kidney problems. Furthermore, smoking, alcohol consumption, use of cocaine, heroin, and other ‘hard drugs’ can also increase one's risk of kidney damage.

9/10

Nutrition for kidneys

According to National Kidney Foundation, studies show that eating whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to keep kidneys healthy. Dark leafy greens, berries, olive oil, fatty fishes, cranberries, sweet potatoes can all benefit your kidneys. Avoid foods that are high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus is important to prevent unnecessary kidney problems.

10/10

High blood pressure

Kidneys play a significant role in maintaining healthy blood pressure readings. That said, when your kidneys don't function properly, it can further increase your blood pressure by releasing certain hormones or by causing retention of salt and water in your body, explains Cleveland Clinic. In a reverse effect, high blood pressure can then impact your kidneys, becoming one of the leading causes of kidney failure.
