Business icon Ratan Tata in ICU, Mumbai hospital confirms critical status
Industrialist Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, is in critical condition and is being treated in the intensive care unit of a Mumbai hospital, according to Reuters. Two sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed his condition.
Tata, 86, had previously stated that his hospital visit was for a routine checkup related to his age and health conditions. However, concerns have grown as his condition reportedly worsened.
Earlier this week, Tata addressed the public through his social media accounts and dismissing reports suggesting he was critically ill. He called his medical evaluations routine and urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation.
He stated, "I am aware of recent rumors circulating regarding my health and want to assure everyone that these claims are unfounded. I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age and related medical conditions. There is no cause for concern. I remain in good spirits and request that the public and media respect refrain from spreading misinformation. Sincerely,"
Ratan Tata is a significant figure in Indian industry. He became chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 and led the group until 2012. During his tenure, Tata Group acquired companies like Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover, expanding from a domestic firm into a global entity. Under his leadership, the group also launched the Tata Nano and expanded Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) into a global IT leader.
Tata stepped down as chairman in 2012 but was later named chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Motors, and Tata Steel. He temporarily returned as interim chairman in 2016 during a leadership dispute.
