Understanding Your Kidneys

Kidneys are an important organ that play a vital role in filtering waste from your blood and maintaining your body's overall balance. Preserving renal (kidney) wellness is essential for your long-term health.
Your kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on either side of your spine, just below your ribcage. They filter waste and extra fluids from your blood to create urine, which your body then excretes. Kidneys also help regulate blood pressure, balance electrolytes, and produce essential hormones.

2/8

Stay hydrated and consume balanced diet

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain kidney health is to stay well-hydrated. Drinking an adequate amount of water helps your kidneys flush out waste and toxins. Aim for at least 8-10 cups (64-80 ounces) of water a day but remember that individual needs vary based on factors like climate and activity level. Also, a balanced diet is key to kidney health.

3/8

Limit salt and sugar

High salt intake can increase blood pressure, which is not good for your kidneys. Avoid processed foods and opt for fresh, whole foods with natural flavors. High sugar intake can lead to conditions like diabetes and obesity, which are risk factors for kidney problems. Limit sugary drinks and snacks.

4/8

Eat protein and exercise daily

While protein is important for overall health, excessive protein intake can strain your kidneys. Choose lean protein sources like poultry, fish, and plant-based proteins.

5/8

Monitor blood pressure

Dr. Tarun Jeloka, Consultant - Nephrology And Transplant, Manipal Hospitals, Pune – Baner says, “Hypertension (high blood pressure) can put extra stress on your kidneys, potentially causing damage over time. Regularly check your blood pressure, and if it's high, work with your healthcare provider to manage it effectively.”

6/8

Quit smoking, alcohol and painkillers

Smoking can damage blood vessels and decrease blood flow to the kidneys. If you smoke, consider quitting, and if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Non-prescription painkillers, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, can be hard on your kidneys if used excessively. If you have chronic pain, consult a healthcare provider for safer alternatives.

7/8

Manage diabetes and maintain healthy weight

Diabetes is a significant risk factor for kidney disease. If you have diabetes, it's essential to manage your blood sugar levels through medication, diet, and regular monitoring. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of kidney disease. Follow a balanced diet and engage in regular physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

8/8

Regular health check-ups

Annual check-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial to assess your overall health, including your kidney function. Regular blood and urine tests can help detect early signs of kidney problems.
Remember to stay hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, control blood pressure, and exercise regularly. By following these easy-to-understand guidelines, you can keep your kidneys healthy and functioning optimally, ensuring your well-being for years to come.
