Paper straws, which are considered environment friendly, have more PFAS than plastic ones!

Do you also use paper straws?

After sipping cold drinks and smoothies from plastic straws for years, most of us have recently switched to "healthier" and "environmental" friendly paper straws. But what a new study has found might leave you shocked. The study published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants has found that paper straws have toxic and hazardous "forever chemicals."

39 brands of paper straws were tested

For the study, the researchers tested 39 brands and toxic chemicals were found in 27. The researchers found that paper straws contain PFAS in a concentration that is used to make paper water-repellent. The 39 brands included straws made of paper, bamboo, plastic and stainless steel. PFAS were not found in steel straws.

"These ‘eco-friendly’ plant-based straws are not necessarily a more sustainable alternative"

"PFAS were found to be present in almost all types of straws, but primarily in those made from plant-based materials. These ‘eco-friendly’ plant-based straws are not necessarily a more sustainable alternative to plastic straws, because they can be considered as an additional source of PFAS exposure in humans and the environment (e.g. after degradation in landfills or through incomplete incineration)," the researchers have said.

What are forever chemicals?

In simple terms, these are the chemicals that do not break away easily and sustain in the environment for a long time. Also known as PFAS or polyfluoroalkyl substances these are found in a range of products that are used by human beings on a daily basis. This makes it extremely important to learn about these products, know how they impact human health, and how to limit their use.

Some examples of PFAS

Commonly used products where PFAS are found are cleaners, textiles, leather, paper and paints, fire-fighting foams, and wire insulation. They are also found in water-resistant fabrics, grease-resistant paper, non-stick cookware, and several personal care products like shampoo, dental floss, nail polish, and eye makeup.

Why are they health hazards?

Several studies have shed light on the toxic effects of PFAS on the body. As listed on the website of the US Environment Protection Agency, PFAS can lead to decreased fertility or increased high blood pressure in pregnant women, can cause developmental defects or delays in infants, and increases the risk of prostate, kidney, and testicular cancers. It can also reduce the body's immune system and can also reduce the vaccine response. It interferes with the body's natural hormones. PFAS also influences cholesterol levels and obesity in the body.
