Pancreatic cancer: 5 signs that are easy to ignore

Pancreatic cancer is a condition in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the pancreas. It's often difficult to detect early, and the prognosis (chance of recovery) is generally poor, but treatment options and outlook can vary. The pancreas' location deep inside the abdominal cavity makes symptoms appear gradually, which makes early detection difficult. However, here are 5 early signs which people often disregard, but need to recognise.... (though they are not exclusive to the condition)

2/11

Abdominal or back pain

In early pancreatic cancer, the upper belly area frequently experiences pain that might migrate to the back region. The pain manifests as dullness, sharpness or ache, which can either come and go or continue indefinitely.

Most people fail to address this discomfort, by thinking it stems from either indigestion, or stress. When pain persists without responding to standard treatments, it becomes essential to seek medical attention.

The pain exhibits different characteristics from typical muscle or joint pain, since it worsens during eating and when resting. Tracking down the pattern of this pain, will help your doctor make a diagnosis.

3/11

Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite

Any weight loss, without attempting to diet, combined with reduced appetite, represents a common, but frequently disregarded indicator. Pancreatic cancer disrupts the body's digestion process, and decreases appetite, which results in weight loss.

The rapid and unintentional weight loss differs from gradual and intentional weight reduction. A doctor needs to be consulted when someone loses significant weight in a brief time period.

When appetite decreases along with weight loss, it results in fatigue and weakness, that makes everyday tasks more difficult. The progression of these changes becomes more pronounced, when the root issue receives no medical attention.

4/11

Jaundice

Sometimes in pancreatic cancer, the skin and eyes take on a yellowish hue, due to bilirubin accumulation in the blood, which results in jaundice. The tumor creates an obstruction that prevents bile from flowing through the bile duct.

People who develop jaundice typically notice skin discoloration along with skin itching or sensitivity. Early jaundice may display faint changes in skin color, so it is crucial to notice even the smallest changes in skin hue.

Medical evaluation becomes necessary when a person experiences dark urine together with pale stools, as well as jaundice. The body develops these noticeable symptoms because bile flow remains disrupted.

5/11

Digestive problems

Normal digestion becomes disrupted by enlarging tumors, which results in nausea and vomiting alongside indigestion and altered bowel movements that produce either diarrhea, or constipation. The blockage of bile flow leads to stool changes, which appear as light-colored greasy floats.

The symptoms usually get dismissed as ordinary digestive complaints, since they share similarities with regular stomach issues. A healthcare provider needs to assess any enduring changes in your digestive system.

The continuous experience of nausea and vomiting can result in dehydration, alongside nutrient deficiencies that negatively impact your overall wellness.

6/11

New-onset diabetes or difficulty controlling existing diabetes

The pancreas maintains blood sugar control through insulin production. The growth of pancreatic cancer disrupts pancreatic function, which results in either new diabetes development, or poor blood sugar management in individuals who already have diabetes.

The sudden appearance of diabetes without apparent reasons sometimes indicates an underlying issue. When you have diabetes and your blood sugar becomes harder to regulate, you need to inform your doctor about this development.

The first indicator of pancreatic cancer may sometimes appear as new diabetes, when other cancer symptoms are absent. Early detection leads to better treatment results, thus patients must pay attention to any changes in blood sugar management.

How to reduce the risk of cancer?

While not all cancers are preventable, you can significantly reduce your risk by making key lifestyle choices. The most important single step is to avoid all forms of tobacco, as it is the leading preventable cause of cancer worldwide. Maintaining a healthy weight is also crucial, as obesity is linked to a higher risk of at least 13 different types of cancer. This can be achieved by staying physically active and following a healthy diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while limiting red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, and refined foods.

10/11

Take care of yourself

Consume a rich diet and exercise regularly to prevent cancer
