Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in children: 5 early symptoms to watch out for

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is no longer limited to adults, but children can get it too. The condition develops when the liver accumulates excessive fat deposits. The accumulation of extra fat in the liver leads to inflammation and damage that develops gradually. The lack of noticeable symptoms in children with fatty liver disease, makes it difficult to detect until the condition reaches an advanced stage. Parents need to recognise warning signs of fatty liver disease, because it primarily affects overweight children, who also have diabetes or other health conditions. Here are 5 indicators of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in chidren...

2/6

Tummy or upper right belly pain

The upper right section of the abdomen experiences mild discomfort or pain, because the liver resides in this area. The liver area experiences a dull sensation of pressure, which might be described as pain. Parents should monitor their child for signs of tummy pain or tenderness, because the child might not express discomfort during activities or after eating. The liver irritation or inflammation from fat accumulation produces this type of pain, which remains at a moderate level. Medical evaluation becomes necessary when this symptom persists.

3/6

Tiredness and fatigue

Fatigue that exceeds normal levels, serves as a crucial indicator which doctors use to diagnose fatty liver disease in children. The liver functions as a central organ for energy production and metabolism, so fat accumulation in this organ leads to decreased body energy levels. Children with fatty liver disease experience increased fatigue, while showing decreased energy levels and reduced interest in their typical activities. The fatigue symptoms stem from liver damage, rather than physical exertion and continue without any apparent reason.

4/6

Mood swings

Children with fatty liver disease sometimes develop irritability and anxiety, together with depressive moods. The condition makes it challenging for children to maintain focus during schoolwork and household activities. The brain function and behavior changes stem from liver problems, which disrupt body chemical equilibrium to produce brain fog and mild cognitive impairment. Parents and teachers need to monitor any unexpected shifts in child behavior or mental state, because these changes might indicate fatty liver disease.

5/6

Jaundice

The liver's inability to process waste products, leads to yellow skin discoloration and white eye discoloration known as jaundice. The yellow skin discoloration emerges as a rare sign of early fatty liver disease in children, when the liver fails to handle waste products correctly. Parents who notice dark urine together with light-colored stools and jaundice in their children should seek immediate medical help because these symptoms point to severe liver damage. However, when detected early, jaundice is fully treatable, with no long term effects.

6/6

Physical examination

The liver becomes enlarged due to fatty liver disease, but kids might not experience noticeable symptoms. During a physical examination, the doctor performs an abdominal check, to detect liver enlargement in children. A doctor can first identify fatty liver disease through liver enlargement which serves as an initial warning sign. Medical professionals use blood tests to check liver enzyme levels and ultrasound imaging, to diagnose the condition. Children who are at risk need to visit their doctor regularly, because early detection of fatty liver disease prevents severe organ damage.
