New side effect of GLP-1 drugs: Study links weight-loss drugs to chronic cough
GLP-1 drugs have emerged as a rare beacon of hope in America’s otherwise horizonless obesity epidemic. Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepbound have been used by nearly 12% of Americans for weight loss, as per a RAND report.
While it has helped numerous celebrities such as Serena Williams and Meghan Trainor lose weight and achieve body positivity, it seems its effects include more than a slimmer waistline. Until now, users had reported various side effects of using GLP-1 drugs such as nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea, along with headaches, fatigue and changes to the skin.
But now, a new potential side effect has come to light, one that could make you think you are just under the weather.
They identified 427,555 patients who had been prescribed the drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes. These drugs mimic the production of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which boosts insulin production, slows digestion and regulates appetite, thus lowering blood sugar and supporting weight management.
The team also observed 1.6 million Type 2 diabetes patients taking other common second-line diabetes medications.
Additionally, these users were also more prone to be diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can trigger a dry cough.
“This cohort study suggests that there is an association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and new diagnosis of chronic cough,” wrote the study authors.
However, they stressed that more research is needed to establish a definitive link and to better understand the biological mechanisms behind the new potential side effect.

But now, a new potential side effect has come to light, one that could make you think you are just under the weather.
New side effect of GLP-1 drugs
In a study published on Wednesday, in JAMA Otolaryngology, researchers analysed medical records from more than 2 million patients collected across the country between 2005 and 2025.They identified 427,555 patients who had been prescribed the drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes.
The shocking results
While comparing the two groups, they found that patients taking a GLP-1 medication had up to a 29% higher risk of developing a chronic cough within the first five years of treatment. A chronic cough is one that lasts eight weeks or longer.Additionally, these users were also more prone to be diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can trigger a dry cough.
“This cohort study suggests that there is an association between GLP-1 receptor agonist use and new diagnosis of chronic cough,” wrote the study authors.
However, they stressed that more research is needed to establish a definitive link and to better understand the biological mechanisms behind the new potential side effect.
